Nintendo has announced that the Nintendo DS portable game system has sold over 4 million copies in the US. Despite the much sleeker and more functional Playstation Portable, whose numbers are estimated to be anywhere from 2.5 to 3 million, depending on who you ask.
Nintendo’s top-selling DS games so far have been Mario Kart DS, which has already sold over 1 million copies in the US despite only being released mid-Nov., and Nintendogs, the game that greatly increased sales of the system in Japan upon release and which has reached over 1.5 million copies sold in the US already.
In Japan the DS has been doing extremely well where it’s sold over 5 million. Which puts worldwide sales of the DS at over 10 million!
UPDATED: Europe reports DS sales of 2.5 million, which puts global DS sales at nearly 13 million! Nintendo of Japan even issued a formal apology as they are out of DS stock until the end of January! DS VS. PSP sales are now set 2:1
The DS has become the fastest selling console in Japan as well, which is quite a feat. And it’s the first system to have five games reach a million copies sold within a year of the system’s launch, those games are: Nintendogs, Mario Kart DS, Animal Crossing: Wild World, Brain Age and Brain Flex.
Nintendo also announced successful numbers regarding individual connections to Nintendo’s online service, Nintendo Wireless Connection, where over 550,000 unique DS users have connected to game online.
