Game Boy joins Strong National Museum’s Toy Hall of Fame

Game Boy videogames Toy Hall of Fame 2009
The Game Boy was inducted into the Toy Hall of Fame in what has to be a huge honor for Nintendo in recognition of the cultural impact of world’s most popular handheld system of all time.

Joining the Game Boy for 2009 were also two more ancient “toys”, these include “The Ball” (in all it’s forms) and the “Big Wheel”.

According to the Strong National Musuem Toy Hall of Fame, the Game Boy was chosen because it was “an innovator and changed the way people play electronic games. It popularized the handheld, mobile game devices.”

Here is what the musuem had to say about “The Ball”, which follows on the heels of “The Stick” from last year. “Roll it, throw it, kick it, catch it, bounce it, or bat at it, the Ball is as old as civilization itself. It has, in fact, been depicted in ancient Egyptian, Greek and Roman drawings and continues to provide opportunities for free play among people of all ages. Baby’s first toy may be a soft and safe Cloth Ball, older children play Kickball on the playground, and a grown-up’s reward for a week’s work may be a round of Tennis or Golf. Today, we even set aside physical spaces - baseball stadiums, tennis courts, and golf courses to play these Ball Games.”

And here is what they had to say about the Big Wheel. “Vroom, Vroom! In the 1960s, Ray Lohr, head designer for Louis Marx & Co., took apart a tricycle, mixed up the parts, and reassembled them into an upside-down trike that handled like a race car. Launched at the 1969 Toy Fair in New York City, the Big Wheel had a low-slung design that made for superior handling, giving kids a sense of independence and control that tippy old trikes could never deliver. By the following Christmas, children all over the country delighted in riding their new - “muscle trikes”. The Big Wheel remained Marx’s big seller for a decade.

But of course the Game Boy is the one we are really interested in, and here is what they had to say about why it won. “Nintendo Game Boy transformed the electronics-games market by popularizing handheld gaming. No videogame platform did more to put gamers on the go than this invention. And go they did, bringing their gaming experience to school, to summer camp, and to the back seat of the family automobile. Over the past two decades, Game Boy has become synonymous with handheld gaming fun. Its portability and efficient design, ability to allow simultaneous multiplayer gaming, and scores of intriguing games (like Tetris and Super Mario Land, featuring Nintendo’s already-iconic character Mario) make it a true innovator.”

It’s also worth noting that this induction is for the entire “Game Boy line” and includes improved hardware from the original design, including the Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance/SP and Game Boy Micro. Now I wonder how long it’ll take before we see the DS included in this list.

It’s also pretty crazy that the Game Boy beat out some pretty stiff competition from the following toy nominees: Cabbage Patch Kids, Game of Life, Hot Wheels, Paper Airplane, Playing Cards, Rubik’s Cube, Sidewalk Chalk, Toy Tea Set, and Transformers.

In order to be chosen, The National Toy Hall of Fame at Strong National Museum of Play must recognize that toy as having engaged and delighted multiple generations. Inspiring them to learn, create, and discover through play. Criteria for induction include: Icon-status (the toy is widely recognized, respected, and remembered); Longevity (the toy is more than a passing fad and has enjoyed popularity over multiple generations); Discovery (the toy fosters learning, creativity, or discovery through play); and Innovation (the toy profoundly changed play or toy design).

To date, a total of 44 toys have been inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame. They include: Article continues »

Pokemon Crystal cheats and hints (GBC guide)

Pokemon Crystal Title Screen Artwork
Looking for Pokemon Crystal cheats and secrets? Then look no further, as we have all kinds of Pokemon Crystal game cheats and guides for the first Game Boy Color sequel to the original Pokemon Game Boy games that started it all.

RARE POKEMON LOCATIONS LIST (May not work with Pokemon Crystal version)

1. Where to Catch Ho-oh
There is only one Ho-oh in Gold and Silver, so make sure you catch it. You can find it on top of the Tin Tower, but you’ll need the Rainbow Wing to go up there. You get the Rainbow Wing from the Radio Station Manager in Goldenrod City (Gold version) or the old man in Pewter City (Silver version).
2. Where to Catch Lugia
You can find Lugia in Whirl Island, off Route 41. You’ll need to know the HM 06 Whirpool technique to get in as well as the Silver Wing. You can find the latter in Pewter City (Gold) or the Radio Station in Goldenrod City (Silver).
3. Where to Catch Entei, Suicune, Raiko
Dogs, cats, what are they? Who cares! They’re cool and they’re exceedingly rare. To catch these guys, go to the Burned Tower in Ecruteak City. When you get close to them, they will run away. After this brief encounter, these fast creatures will roam around Johto. So where do you find them? Check your Pokedex and have some Fast Balls ready.
4. Where to Catch Togepi
Professor Elm’s assistant will give you an egg in Violet City after you beat the Gym Leader there. It will hatch into a Togepi.
5. Where to Catch Tyrogue
You can get this young Fighting Pokemon from Blackbelt Kyo (if you have an empty slot in your party) in Mt. Mortar, or simply breed one using Hitmonchan or Hitmonlee and a Ditto.
6. How to Catch Sudowoodo
This odd Rock type blocks your way on Route 36 (just like Snorlax below). Use the Squirtbottle from Goldenrod City to battle it.

How to Solve the “Unown” Pokemon Mystery
In the “Ruins of Alph” (which stands for “Alphabet”) you will find a mysterious Pokemon(s) known as “Unown”. This unique Pokemon, #201, is the only Pokemon (at the time of Gold/Silver) that exists in more than one shape . . . there is one Unkown for each letter in the English alphabet, making 26 Unown Pokemon total.

To get these Pokemon, you must solve various sliding-tile puzzles at the Ruins of Alph. Doing so successfully will drop you into the ruins and caves below where you can try your hand at catching some Unown Pokemon. At first only one puzzle is accessible (the solution is Kabutop). Once you have gained the Surf and Strength techniques, you will be able to solve the rest.

Using Surf you can swim to the Southern cave and solve the Aerodactyl puzzle. The final two puzzles can be reached via the Union Cave by using Surf and Strength. The puzzle to the southwest is an Omanyte, while the one to the west is a Ho-oh puzzle.

The more puzzles you solve, the more types of Unown will be available for you to catch. Once you have caught three or more, head to the Alph Lab (found just outside the entrance to the Ruins of Alph). There you can get an update to your Pokedex that allows you to view and keep track of each type of Unown you have caught. Once you have caught all 26 types of Unown, return to the Alph Lab and use the machine in the corner. This gives you an additional Game Boy Printer option that allows you to print out banners using the letters as shapes of the Unown Pokemon - a special “Unown Font”.

SPECIAL POKEMON TRAINERS LIST
There are six extremely helpful Pokemon trainers in Gold, Silver and Crystal. If you keep their telephone numbers in your Pokegear, these guys will then randomly give you useful tips throughout the game on how or where to find rare Pokemon. They will also guide you towards Pokemon “swarms”, allowing you to catch certain wild Pokemon much easier.

1. Fisherman Ralph (Route 32) - Helps you find Qwilfish.
2. Hiker Anthony (Route 33) - Helps you find Dunsparce.
3. Bug Catcher Arnie (Route 35) - Helps you find Yanma.
4. Schoolboy Chad (Route 38) - Helps you find Snubbull.
5. Fisherman Wilton (Route 44) - Helps you find Remoraid.
6. Hiker Parry (Route 45) - Helps you find Marill.

Easy Breeding Using Ditto
Here is a trick to make breeding for the Pokemon you want a breeze. To do this trick, simply select the Pokemon of your choice and a Ditto and put them in the DayCare Center. After waiting a bit, the old man will give you an egg that will hatch as whatever Pokemon you put in with Ditto! This makes it so that you don’t need to look around for a female and male Pokemon to breed. A major time savor.

How to Avoid Random Encounters With Cut
You can easily get through grassy areas without fighting random Pokemon by using the HM Cut move. Once you have taught Cut to a Pokemon, you can use that Pokemon to cut down trees and slice through grass while on the overworld. The trick is to use Cut to slice the grass in front of you. Do this and you can then walk on the spot without fighting a random Pokemon. Note that if you leave the area and return, the grass will have grown back.

How to Encounter “Shiny” Pokemon
You can encounter a different color of a normal Pokemon known as a “Shiny Pokemon”. However these are uber rare, and the odds of it happening are 1 out of 8,192! Good luck!

There are six extremely helpful Pokemon trainers in Gold and Silver.

Good luck!

Pokemon Yellow cheats and hints (GB guide)

Pokemon Yellow TitleScreen Artwork
Looking for cheats for Pokemon Yellow Version: Special Pikachu Edition? Then look no further. Below is a list of cheats, secrets and tips for this enhanced edition of Pokemon Red & Blue for the original Game Boy.

How to Catch Mew in Pokemon Yellow
There is no official way to catch Mew in Pokemon Yellow. The only way was to have visited a Nintendo Event where he was uploaded to your copy of the game. So in order to get yourself a Mew, you will need to find a friend’s copy who DOES have Mew, and then trade. Alternatively, you can use a cheat device to unlock him, but be warned that this and other methods may mess your game up. If that happens we are not responsible, use at your own discretion.

Mew Pokemon Yellow screenshot
Mew Glitch
There is a glitch you can use to catch Mew, however use it at your own risk. To do this trick, do not fight the Gambler facing the house in between Lavender Town and Saffron City. Instead, go to the door of the house and save your game. (Note that Mew may be erased if you save after catching him). Now step towards the gambler and immediatly press start. If done correctly you will bring up the Start Menu before the Gambler sees you. Now select your Flying Pokemon and Fly to Cerulean City. The gambler will then see you but you will Fly away. (Your Start, A, and B buttons will not work during this point). Walk up Nugget Bridge and then go to the 5th Trainer after Nugget Bridge (He will be facing up). He is a Youngster with a Slowpoke. Defeat his Slowpoke, and then your Start, A, and B buttons will function again. Now Fly back to Lavender Town and walk towards Saffron City. Your Menu should pop up by itself. Hit B to exit it, and then you will enter a battle with a Mew, where you can try to capture it. Good luck! You also may be able to trade Mew once capture to another Pokemon game, and then have Mew permanently (note that this hasn’t been tested, try at your own risk).

Here is a video guide using the above glitch to catch Mew! (thx to Neadoe)
