Nintendo President Satoru Iwata has spoken out about the downloadable future of videogames. According to him, he believes that it will take the market around 20 years before digital distribution of videogames replaces the physical in-store market.
To quote Iwata:
“On a rough analysis basis, the connection ratio of Wii is around 35%, in the Japanese market. And that of DS is probably, 20% or so. It had increased with the measures like Nintendo Zone with McDonald’s to lower the hurdle for connection, but has not reached the 30% mark. …Most radical people even dare to say that retailers will be replaced by digital distribution in no time. But personally, I think it will still require a significant amount of time. In other words, it will require many years and months for the majority of video game purchase to become digital. In short, in 20 years or so I might say it will have probably changed. But in 5 years or so, I do not totally agree with opinions that no one will purchase titles at retailers by then. Habits of life do not change such radically and quickly. Especially for the expanded audience of various people, to whom we are and will be trying to appeal, I believe their habits will change more slowly.”
As a lot of people have been discussing in regards to this issue, 20 years is more likely for a Nintendo system, but Microsoft and Sony will probably be at full digital distribution by the next-generation of consoles. Especially with Sony’s PSP Go already being fully digital, and Xbox 360 offering digital downloads for full Xbox 360 games with their Games on Demand service.

The Pokemon starters for Pokemon HeartGold & SoulSilver and the starter’s evolutions have been revealed by Nintendo since the games are already out in Japan.
These upcoming games are remakes of the original Pokemon Gold and Pokemon Silver that were released for the Game Boy Color way back in 2000.
There are three different sets of starters in the game that you can acquire. Below is the list:
Johto Pokemon Starters

The first set of starters you get in the game are the Johto starters, and include Chikorita, Cyndaquil and Totodile. These Pokemon got their debut in the original Pokemon Gold & Silver. You will choose one of these three at the beginning of the game.
Kanto Pokemon Starters

The second set of Pokemon you can get in the game are the Kanto Starter Pokemon including Bulbasaur, Charmander and Squirtle from Pokemon FireRed and Pokemon LeafGreen (They made their debut in the original Pokemon games Pokemon Red & Pokemon Blue way back in 1998 on the original Game Boy). These Pokemon can be obtained by paying Professor Oak a visit after you have earned all 16 Badges and defeated your rival Red. As always, you will only be able to choose one of the three.
Hoenn Pokemon Starters

The third and last batch of Pokemon Starters that you can acquire are the Hoenn Starter Pokemon. You can get one of these three Pokemon, who made their debut in Pokemon Ruby and Pokemon Sapphire, by visiting Steven Stone in Silph Co. in Saffron City after you have defeated your rival Red. Could the Nintendo DS 2 follow in the footsteps of Sony’s PSP Go and become a download-only handheld, where games are no longer on physical media and only available via a Nintendo online shop?
Nintendo’s President, Satoru Iwata, has stated that they are definitely looking into that possibility for the successor to the current DSi system (and the recently announced DSi XL).
Going one-step further, it looks like Nintendo is specifically looking at using the same 3G wireless network as many cell phones use, and they are looking at the Amazon Kindle for inspiration. That’s because the Kindle allows users to easily download thousands of e-books (including magazines, newspapers, novels, blogs, periodicals, etc.) directly from any wireless 3G connection for “free”, with the cost for that access being directly integrated into the price of the actual unit (which ranges from $259 to $489). And that is a model that Nintendo seems interested in studying.
Speaking to the Financial Times, Iwata said the following:
“I’m interested because the Kindle is a new business model in which the user doesn’t bear the communications cost,” Iwata told the Times. “Only people who can pay thousands of yen a month in mobile phone subscriptions can be iPhone customers. That doesn’t fit Nintendo customers because we make amusement products.”
Though Iwata is a bit worried about the initial cost of the system being a bit too steep if the Kindle model is the direction they will go in. “In reality, if we did this it would increase the cost of the hardware, and customers would complain about Nintendo putting prices up, but it is one option for the future.”
I personally do not like the idea of a download-only gaming system, and in some sense I agree with a friend of mine, who said she hopes the PSP Go crashes and burns. The problem from my perspective (as well as her and her husband’s) is due to the fact that not only is physical media non-existent (which means no more game collecting), but it also means that the company will maintain direct control over all aspects of your gaming library, from the price you have to pay (no bargain shopping) to the fact that they could even delete games from the service if they so chose to. I think it’s a slippery slope. However, I feel it may just be the inevitable future . . . Then again, they said books would also disappear. How many people do you see in public using their kindles in place of a traditional book/newspaper? Exactly.

Blue Dragon: Awakened Shadow is coming to America in Spring of 2010 on the DS, thanks to D3Publisher who will be handling the English localization of the second DS spin-off title (following Blue Dragon Plus, released earlier this year for DS). It will also be released in Europe next year.
Plot-wise, the game takes place two years after the original Xbox 360 Blue Dragon and one year after Blue Dragon Plus. And for the first time in the series, players will not be controlling Shu and his companions. In their stead, is a character that the player fully creates, who remains unnamed in the adventure. However all the characters that fans know and love do still make appearances in the game.
Unlike Blue Dragon Plus, Awakened Shadow replaces the RTS-style gameplay with that of a straight Action-RPG. As such, you will explore fully 3D fields and attack enemies directly, calling upon your shadows to duel out magic attacks while your character hammers them with melee strikes. Your character, as mentioned above, is fully customizable and you can change their gender, hairstyle, eyebrows, eyes and of course, their armor and weapons. Additionally, the game is packed with FMV cut-scenes and contains an online multiplayer mode in which up to three players can duke it out with their customized characters.
Awakened Shadow will not be developed by Mistwalker (who created the original Blue Dragon for Xbox 360) nor by Brownie Brown, who was charged with creating the DS’ Blue Dragon Plus (Brownie Brown is a name familiar to Nintendo fans as the creators of Mother 3, Magical Vacation, and more recently, Magical Starsign and Heroes of Mana).
Instead, Blue Dragon: Awakened Shadow is being developed by Tri-Crescendo, who is well-known to RPG fans as the creators of the Xbox 360 (and later PS3) RPG Eternal Sonata, as well as the Wii adventure Fragile: Farewell Ruins of the Moon.
Even though Mistwalker isn’t handling development duties, fans shouldn’t be too alarmed because Hironobu Sakaguchi (Series Creator), Akira Toriyama (Character Designer of Blue Dragon) and Hideo Baba (Brand Manager of Tales Series) were still involved in the development of Awakened Shadow.
Here is a trailer for the Japanese version of the game (called Blue Dragon: Ikai no Kyoj? which translates to Blue Dragon: Great Beast of the Underworld).

C.O.P.: The Recruit has a cast of 10 characters and is an open-world combination of action, shooting and driving for the Nintendo DS. It will be released on November 3rd in America and is out now in Europe.
In the game, you are Dan Miles, a former underground street racer and now a new recruit in the Criminal Overturn Program (C.O.P.). Under the terms of the C.O.P., Dan has become a street detective working to protect New York citizens against large-scale threats. Working with his mentor, Detective Brad Winter, Dan is investigating a series of terrorist attacks in the city when Brad is falsely arrested, putting the investigation on hold. While trying to uncover the truth behind Brad’s arrest, Dan goes undercover and returns to his life on the streets. Little by little he gets wrapped up in a deadly, widespread conspiracy and must work to prevent a potentially catastrophic attack on the city.
Here is an exclusive list of the characters that will appear in C.O.P.: The Recruit:
(You can see what they look like in the image above, starting from left)
1. Jimmy Vartanian
He’s the boss of the local armenian mobsters. He and his men are not violent people but smart businessmen eager to get their hands dirty to exploit the weaknesses of the city. Jimmy earns money officially by getting rid of the city’s garbage, and earns even more by providing safe transport for stolen goods in…garbage trucks. He’s also an amateur of modern art and an old friend of Casey Winter’s.
2. Isgo Vartanian
Jimmy’s younger brother is the owner of the Armenian bar “Isgo’s Well” in Brooklyn. He uses his brother’s business to import sportscars in the U.S. He’s also fond of racing and loves to cruise to Manhattan in an European roadster, and tease the local police in their old cars.
3. Crimp
Detective Winter’s most trusted informant, Crimp has an uncanny knack of knowing everything about all the illegal activities going on in his neighborhood. He acts as your eyes and ears on the street, keeping you one step ahead of your enemies. Nobody seems to know what Crimp does when he’s not helping you out . . . and that’s the way he likes it!
4. Casey Winter
Winter’s younger sister, Casey, is a private person who finds it difficult to trust outsiders - especially friends of her brother! She was suspicious of you when you first met, but the more time you spent together, the better you seemed to get on. You’re even starting to wonder if she likes you as more than just a friend! But what will happen if she finds out about your criminal past?
5. Marty
This young man is Dan’s oldest friend. They were raised in New Jersey and started underground racing together, until Dan was taken away by the CCD and sent to the C.O.P. program. Since then, Marty, who always has been good at fixing cars, has opened a custom car workshop named “Blacktop”, in Long Island.
6. The Rev
He’s the leader and some may say, the guru of the Speed’n Bleed, an underground racing club that goes farther than anyone. The Rev created Speed’n Bleed and manages it like a cult. Sportscars are worshipped, and only great drivers can be initiated and race along with him. The Rev often compares his racing challenge to mythological events.
7. Detective Brad Winter
A senior agent at CCD, Brad Winter arrested you for taking part in street racing and the illegal carrying of a weapon. Despite being on different sides of the law, you seemed to get on well from the start. After he persuaded his bosses to sign you up to the program, you found out that this was because you reminded him of himself at your age. Winter’s a cool guy who always helps you through even your most dangerous missions.
8. Captain Gilroy
He’s the boss of the CCD. The veteran cop was once promoted from the police department to the special unit designed to control the city and its road using hi-tech tools. He managed to establish the CCD and to create strong links with the PD and the coast guard, but never was enough in politics to rise higher. Duty took his toll on him and he’s now a severe a secluded man.
9. Lieutenant Strickland
She has the most impressive record in the department. She was first at the police school and was the youngest lieutenant to be promoted to the CCD, superceding Brad Winter who she worked under before. She now runs the show with Dan being assigned to her as a CCD trainee, and she’s being tough to him, as she wants everything to be done “by the book”.
10. Dan Miles (The Hero)
Welcome to the Criminal Overturn Program! As Dan Miles, a former underground street racer, you chose to join CCD to avoid serving time in a New Jeresy jail. A rebellious teenager, your love of fast cars and extreme danger dragged you and your best friend, Marty, into the criminal world of street racing. You owe your freedom to Detective Brad Winter, who recruited you to the program, and you’re now determined to pay him back using your special skills to fight crime.
11. Bomb Zombies Leader
Little is known about the mysterious head of Bomb Zombies, a feared terrorist group that has been casting a shadow over the USA for years. One thing’s for sure though, he’s the most wanted man in the country. In fact, some terrorism experts fear his organization could pose an even greater threat than previously thought.
