Fable Fortune Kickstarter canceled as developer finds outside funding

Flaming Fowl Studios has canceled its crowdfunding campaign for Fable Fortune, a collectible card game set in the Fable universe. Instead, the developer has secured additional, alternative financing to support the game’s development.

“With the immediate future of Fable Fortune now secure, we have taken the decision to end our Kickstarter campaign early to focus on releasing a Closed Beta build as quickly as possible,” Flaming Fowl wrote in a campaign update. The studio neglected to mention the source of the outside production funds.

In the meantime, players can continue to check out the game’s alpha, which launched alongside the crowdfunding period last month. All backers with access to that build will also be able to play the closed beta when it begins. Those who aren’t guaranteed to get into the closed beta can now register online.

Fable Fortune was in danger of not making its campaign goal, set to about $365,900. With less than a week left in the period, 1,536 backers had contributed just under $86,285. Now that another investor has come onboard, the Fable series will continue on — albeit in a different genre than original, defunct developer Lionhead Studios’ role-playing game franchise. Flaming Fowl Studios comprises several ex-Lionhead members, and it has licensed the series from its owner, Microsoft.
