Far Cry Primal Release Date Announced (PS4, Xbox One, PC)

Far Cry Primal has a release date of February 23rd, 2016 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, with a later March 1st, 2016 release on PC. Far Cry Primal is the 5th core game in Ubisoft’s critically acclaimed Far Cry series, and the follow-up to Far Cry 4.

Check out this all-new “Beast Master” trailer for Far Cry Primal from the Game Awards 2015.

Far Cry Primal is being developed by Ubisoft Montreal, the same team that made Far Cry 4, as well as Rainbow Six: Siege, Watch Dogs, Child of Light, Assassin’s Creed: Unity & Assassin’s Creed: Rogue, as well as Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon & Splinter Cell: Blacklist. Phew, quite the pedigree then, eh.

Far Cry Primal takes the series back to prehistoric times in a first for the First-Person Shooter genre. Unlike past Far Cry games, this time there are absolutely NO GUNS.

Naturally, players will instead have to face enemies with ancient stone-age weapons, using the likes of Spears, Bow & Arrows, Axes, Clubs, and the like.

Players will explore an open-world as main character “Takkar”, in a story set in the beginning of the Mesolithic period twelve thousand years ago; in a fictional land called “Oros”.

A main feature of the game is the fact that the world is full of wildlife and beasts, that players can tame, control and fight against.

The Sabretooth is one of the strongest enemies in the game, whereas the young Mammoth can be ridden. From atop it’s back, you can attack enemies with spears or arrows, and can go charging through a whole host of foes like an unstoppable bull in a china Shop!

The key element of Far Cry Primal however is directly using animals to attack!

All of the different beasts in the game can be tamed by Takkar, “The Beast Master”, and used in your assaults against other human enemies.

For example, the “Jaguar” is a stealth asset, as it will crouch alongside you as you crouch. This allows it to sneak up on your prey, and you can sic all animals on your foes with by literally pointing in the direction you want them to attack and watching them go to work!

Animals even come into play with items, for example one item is essentially a “Bee Bomb”, throw at an enemy and watch them panic as bees swarm them with stingers sheathed. Very, very cool!

Players will also battle other tribes, and eventually rise to power and lead your own tribe.

You will have to scavenge for food, bait & tame beasts with it, and craft weapons in order to survive. You’ll even have to hunt for food to eat, and light fires; and the world comes complete with a day-night cycle where certain enemies become more aggressive and dangerous in the dark. At night fire will be crucial to survive and to see.

Another big feature is the ability to essentially transform into an owl… Actually, it’s a pet, but this pet can be controlled, allowing you to scout ahead for enemies and tribal outposts. Not only can you see the world from above as the owl, but you can also sic animals from above and even drop Fire Bombs and other weapons to disorient the enemy tribes before an assault! Freakin’ awesome!

Eventually you will come across giant bonfires that can be lit on fire. Once the wood is lit with a Fire Arrow, it will serve as a teleport in which you can fast-travel, and essentially allows you to “claim” that area and fill in the map of the world… Which is covered by a fog of war that will only lift by actually exploring it.

Far Cry Primal looks absolutely awesome!

I’m very happy to see that game developers are starting to explore new content for the FPS genre, and doing so with some prehistoric settings, something we also see in Sony’s upcoming PS4-exclusive “Horizon: Zero Dawn“.

The animal taming & beastmaster abilities are absolutely insane; I love the way it really changes up the gameplay.

Actually being able to use the animals in your attacks to this extent is an ingenius idea. And it’s a wonder that no one has thought of it before.

How excited are you about Far Cry Primal?!
