Mirror’s Edge: Catalyst Announced for PS4, Xbox One & PC. Final Name of Next-Gen Reboot

Mirror’s Edge 2 is, at long last, a reality; going by the final title of “Mirror’s Edge: Catalyst“! This is the long-awaited next-gen sequel/reboot that fans have been clamoring for since 2008!

Check out this Mirror’s Edge: Catalyst documentary from last year’s E3 2014; which gives you an idea of what to expect.

Very little is known about the game, but here is what the developers have to say:

“Two years ago we revealed that we were making a new Mirror’s Edge. Last year, we gave you a behind the scenes look into some of the early progress we had made. And though we haven’t said much else in all that time, we have been listening. Thank you for your incredible passion and your patience. I’m excited to tell you that it’s paid off — by this time next week, you will have finally seen more of the game at E3.

Mirror’s Edge has always had a special place in the hearts of all of us at DICE. The first game had a lot of promise. It was unlike anything else in terms of the gameplay and style — it had a unique soul. But as much as we loved that game, we knew it could be more. So that’s what we have set out to do as we introduce Mirror’s Edge to a new generation.

“Mirror’s Edge has always had a special place in the hearts of all of us at DICE. The first game had a lot of promise. It was unlike anything else in terms of gameplay and style — it had a unique soul.” – Project Lead Sara Jansson

The team has spent a lot of time re-evaluating every aspect of the game and making it a new experience. This is not a sequel, this is not Mirror’s Edge 2.

We have landed on a vision that honors the first game — pushing the boundaries of first person movement and diving deeper into the story behind our heroine Faith — but also brings a lot of great new, interesting gameplay and features to the experience for our players.

So on behalf on the entire team here at DICE, we can’t wait to show you what we have been pouring our heart and soul into. We can’t wait to introduce you to Mirror’s Edge: Catalyst.

Tune in to the EA press conference on Monday, June 15 at 1:00 PM PDT to learn more. You should also be sure to subscribe to our official Mirror’s Edge: Catalyst YouTube channel to be the first to see more. As you can see in the write-up above, Mirror’s Edge: Catalyst will be an all-new re-envisioning of the hopes, dreams & aspirations that the original developers at DICE were trying to achieve with the original 2008 Mirror’s Edge.

Thus this game is more of a reboot of the franchise, rather than what one would call a direct-sequel.

It will be interesting to see how close to the spirit of the original “Mirror’s Edge 2” (whooops! I mean “Catalyst”) gets, or whether the developers take it and expand it to great lengths in all-new directions that deviate from the spirit of the original game.

I hope that Mirror’s Edge: Catalyst will really retain the same focus as the original; and not change it too much to where it could be anything else…. It must, look, play and most importantly FEEL like Mirror’s Edge; a game that was very unique & unmistakable.

Thankfully DICE (Mirror’s Edge, Battlefield: Bad Company, Battlefield 2142, Battlefield 3 & Battlefield 4, Battlefield Hardline, Star Wars Battlefront Reboot), the same developers who made the first one, are honing this one, so Mirror’s Edge: Catalyst looks to be in good hands (and the developer diary above fills me with hope that they will get it right).

It’s also great to see that a woman is heading the development of Mirror’s Edge: Catalyst, given that Faith is a very strong videogame female protagonist. Thus having a girl heading up development should give us fans some interesting results in style, aesthetics and hopefully, emotional connection to the characters & story, that wouldn’t otherwise see fruition with a male-lead team.
