Final Fantasy: Record Keeper has been announced for Western release on iOS & Android as the newest 16-bit-style JRPG for mobile, thanks to Square Enix and developer DeNA. The game has sold millions of copies in Japan; This will mark the first time Westerners will get to see what all the fuss is about.

Gameplay in Final Fantasy: Record Keeper is as strategic and challenging as ever with the classic Final Fantasy Active Time Battle (ATB) system in place. Players battle their way through the most epic Final Fantasy moments in 16-bit retro-style, woven together on mobile with an all-new tale.
Featuring skill-based interactive gameplay, players plan attacks, carefully choose tactics, and engage enemies in active time battles.
In Final Fantasy: Record Keeper, players will be able to experience the complete Final Fantasy universe and it is the only game to let players relive favorite moments across all past Final Fantasy installments and build a team of classic characters.
Featuring an all-star cast including Tidus, Lightning, and Cloud, players recruit their favorite heroes from across the entire Final Fantasy franchise to form the most dynamic team of all time.
With a massive roster of characters, the possibilities are endless! Characters can each be completely customized and equipped to the fullest with iconic gear, powerful spells, summons, and hundreds of weapons to choose from.

While a lot of people complain about seeing Square Enix go more-and-more heavily into mobile content like this; I still think it’s more of a positive thing than a negative thing.
It’s interesting to see them experimenting with new ideas. Although they are doing so at quite a fast pace IMHO, and there are so many of these mobile products that I’ve begun to lose track.
Still this sounds like an interesting idea. Since Square Enix doesn’t generally make these type of retro RPGs anymore, the mobile space has worked to fill that void some. And I don’t think that’s a bad thing.
