What are the Top 100 Best PS2 Games of All Time? Ah the PlayStation 2… Sony’s slick DVD powerhouse that not only put the DVD format of disc media on the map (it was the first game system to come with a built-in DVD player for watching movies standard, it could also play music CDs), but it also has arguably the greatest lineup of games ever.

Of course, that’s a matter of opinion (for me, the PS1 trumps it *puts on brace knuckles to prepare for the beating*); but no one can deny that the PlayStation 2 has one of the largest and one of the greatest videogame libraries with AAA, must-play titles oozing out of every pore from every developer & publisher imaginable and in all genres known to man.

Sales-wise, the PS2 is unmatched and is the best-selling videogame console system of all time, selling over 155 million consoles worldwide (that’s literally half the population of the United States!).

“Hail to the king, baby.”

It’s nearest competitor is the Nintendo DS at 154 million consoles (which could still unseat the PS2…) and then the original Game Boy at 118 million sold. But those are both handhelds, a console competitor doesn’t enter the equation until the original PSOne, which sold 102 million consoles. But that’s also made by Sony… so it’s not until #5 where you get the Nintendo Wii at 101 million where Sony finally gets some real competition. And that number pales in comparison to 150+ million… The Wii is followed, in order, by the Xbox 360 (84 million), PS3 (82 million), PSP (82 million), Game Boy Advance (81 million), NES (61 million), SNES (49 million) & 3DS (45 million).

So as you can see, the PS2 stands alone as the reigning champ of videogame consoles. Whereas the original PS1 slapped the “cool” back into the videogame console business, it was the PS2 that blew cool into the stratosphere and cemented Sony as king.

PS: Many consider the PS2 to be the greatest system of all time. Do you agree based on it’s library and how many PS2 games you mark as your favorite games of all time? For me, personally, the PS1 was a greater system simply because it had: Final Fantasy VII/VIII/IX, Resident Evil 1/2/3 and Metal Gear Solid 1. Add other personal favorites like Fear Effect and RPGs like Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete, Arc the Lad Collection, Legend of Dragoon and Parasite Eve and you have another system who’s lineup is unparalleled. Then there’s the PS3…. 😉
