Prey 2 is officially no more, as Bethesda has cancelled the long-in-development sequel as of Halloween 2014. (“Happy Halloween?” -Ed) This shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone, as Prey 2 had completely dropped off the radar since its announcement back in 2011. 🙁

The game was to be the sequel to the oft-forgotten 2006 first-person shooter Prey 1 starring a Native American character, with a mythical storyline of aliens & teleportation.

Prey 1 was developed by Human Head Studios with 3D Realms producing and published by 2K Games. Bethesda eventually picked up the rights, which they still maintain.
“Human Head is no longer working on Prey 2, but it’s a franchise we still believe we can do something with. We just need to see what that something is.
Although Prey 2 is dead, the franchise still has value Bethesda says, it’s just that the ideas for Prey 2 didn’t live up to their expectations.
Prey 2 was also a last-gen title (PS3, Xbox 360 & PC), so it makes little sense to continue development now that the next-gen is well underway.
You can bet that if they do revive Prey 2, it will be a completely re-invented from the ground up for PlayStation 4, Xbox One & PC.

The confirmation of Prey 2’s cancellation was given by Bethesda vice president Pete Hines at PAX Australia in an interview with CNET.
“Prey 2 was game we believed in, but we never felt that it got to where it needed to be – we never saw a path to success if we finished it,” Hines said.
He continued: “It wasn’t up to our quality standard and we decided to cancel it. It’s no longer in development. That wasn’t an easy decision, but it’s one that won’t surprise many folks given that we hadn’t been talking about it.
Human Head Studios is no longer working on the game, but it’s a franchise we still believe we can do something with — we just need to see what that something is.”
Personally, although I never did play the original Prey, even I could tell that they got way too far away from what made the original Prey great when they announced the sequel, Prey 2. Even though gameplay wise, Prey 2 did look pretty sweet from what they showed.
I still think pretty much everyone can agree that this is the right choice to make. While the demo looked great, it was just a demo… so who knew what the rest of the game looked like.
Hopefully they’ll re-release an HD Remaster of the original Prey 1 for next-gen consoles & PC (at least that way they won’t be sitting on the license. Re-release the original for all digital platforms too while they are at it), and follow that up with a new version of Prey 2 that is much closer to what everyone was hoping to see with the sequel.
