Rainbow Six Siege is the upcoming installment of the acclaimed first-person shooter franchise developed by the renowned Ubisoft Montreal studio for the new generation of consoles and PC.

Inspired by the reality of counter terrorist operatives across the world, Siege invites players to master the art of destruction. Intense close quarters confrontations, high lethality, tactics, team play, and explosive action are at the center of the experience.

A hostage situation unfolds into a sequence of team strategy, breach and stronghold tactics, and close-quarters destruction, as attackers and defenders act and react to one unit’s attempt to overcome the other in this gripping mode.

As the trailer video reveals, heavy-duty strategy is the name of the game in Rainbow Six: Siege. Before the mission begins you’ll need to strategize with your teammates while in the helicopter above. You’ll need to continue to communicate as the mission begins and changes moment to moment if you are going to be successful.

Players who are being sieged upon and must hold their defense against the invaders, have the opportunity to lay down obstacles like Barbed Wire, Mines and Reinforced doors. For both sides, the destructible environments come into play as players can completely destroys walls or shoot holes through doors, walls, floors and roofs to create vantage points from which to take out their enemies. This changes the entire dynamic of the game.

All manner of gadgets will also be available, as per this being a Tom Clancy title. One device shown off allows players to spy under doors via a flat controllable drone, that they can use to stake out the enemy and locate exactly where the hostage is. However they have to be careful because the drone is not invisible. You can use the destructible environments to peek into rooms and, if you are strategic enough, to do so without alerting your enemies.

Rainbow Six: Siege also features a minimalist display, where you will have to rely on visual cues for information, outside of seeing when an opponent is tagged or killed.

Overall, Rainbow Six: Siege was MIGHTILY impressive at E3 2014 and the initial reveal trailer blew me away. I’ve never been a fan of squad-based, cooperative and/or competitive shooters of any type. But the destructible environments combined with the Siege mode objectives just looks very, very cool.

I’m definitely looking forward to seeing how this game pans out. Rainbow Six: Siege is set for 2015.
