Tekken X Street Fighter Not Cancelled Confirms Namco

Tekken x Street Fighter (pronounced: Tekken CROSS Street Fighter) is still in development and has not been cancelled, confirmed Namco Bandai and Tekken director Katsuhiro Harada at Comic-Con 2014. Platforms have yet to be confirmed.

Tekken x Street Fighter is the Tekken-led, Namco-developed fighting game crossover that was announced four years ago; and is not to be confused with the 2012’s Street Fighter x Tekken, out now on Xbox 360, PS3, PS Vita, PC and iOS.

Whereas Street Fighter x Tekken was based on the side-scrolling gameplay of Street Fighter IV, and featuring characters from both franchises, Tekken x Street Fighter will feature the three-dimensional, fully polygonal fighting gameplay of the Tekken franchise, likely based on the Tekken 6 or Tekken 7 game engines.

When asked whether Tekken x Street Fighter was cancelled, Harada stated:

“It’s still in development, and it is moving forward, but that’s on the development side. So obviously, with all of the products, there’s that special timing that we need for that to have its own spotlight. So on the marketing side, it’s a special situation, but we can say that it hasn’t been cancelled, so please relax.”

Here’s a video of the Street Fighter X Tekken panel from 2010’s New York Comic-Con.

I’m very curious to see what Street Fighter characters will look like when giving a Tekken makeover, so I’m very excited to see the first official footage.

Hopefully it will be announced or shown soon and given a 2014 release. The game likely had to be delayed so that Namco Bandai could update it for play on PS4 & Xbox One, although it’ll likely still released on PS3 & Xbox 360 as well.

I hope against all hope that after finishing Tekken x Street Fighter and Tekken 7, and after Warner Bros. and NetherRealm finish up Mortal Kombat X, that the two powerhouse Western & Eastern fighting game developers, NetherRealm and Capcom, team up to create Mortal Kombat vs Street Fighter!

Now that the world has seen how popular crossovers like Marvel vs Capcom 3 and Street Fighter x Tekken can be, both sides should be able to see the benefit of mixing two of the most popular fighting game franchises and the godfathers of the genre! MAKE IT HAPPEN BOON!
