Final Fantasy Type-0 HD Announced for PS4 & Xbox One

Final Fantasy Type-0 HD (Type Zero) is officially coming out on PS4 & Xbox One in America & Europe! Hurrah! Final Fantasy fans rejoice! Square Enix confirmed this at E3 2014.

This all-new-to-us game is a full high-definition remaster of the original PSP-exclusive Final Fantasy XIII side-story that was previously only released in Japan! Huzzah!

Many people thought that this game would never see the light of day in the English world due to the fact that so much time had passed since it’s 2011 release in the Land of the Rising Sun, and the fact that Square Enix seemed to ignore the call of fans to localize it and release it elsewhere. Thankfully that day has now come! Huge kudos to Square Enix for listening to fans!

“I’d like to start this out by thanking everyone who let us know how badly you wanted this game to come to North America. Ever since the original PlayStation Portable release in Japan, you guys have never given up on it, raising your voices in an effort to see this title come to North America and Europe. Well, I’m here to tell you that it’s coming and it’s going to be in HD.” Said Sakura Minamida, Senior Product Manager of Square Enix.

“The voice of our Western fans was instrumental in the development of Final Fantasy Type-0, and we’re very excited to release this title soon,” said Hajime Tabata, director of Final Fantasy Type-0. “The new PlayStation 4 and Xbox One gaming platforms have really helped to re-envision this dynamic and turbulent world of Orience.”

Here is what Final Fantasy Type-0 for PSP looks like in English, via a fan translation.

For those who don’t know, Final Fantasy Type-0 was originally entitled “Final Fantasy Agito XIII” for Japanese cellphones before development moved to PSP and the name was changed. It is part of the “Fabula Nova Crystallis” universe that was created to coincide with Final Fantasy XIII. Games that are part of this series include the original Final Fantasy XIII, it’s sequel Final Fantasy XIII-2, the final game in the trilogy Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, the upcoming Final Fantasy XV (15. Previously known as “Final Fantasy Versus XIII”), and Final Fantasy Agito for mobile phones in Japan.

Gameplay is similar to that in the PSP title Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, where you directly control characters, tackling missions and engaging in massive battles. The characters you see below are a group of twelve students of a Magic Academy, each of whom commands Magic and is called “Class Zero” (thus the title). When their country is assaulted by the Milites Empire, who seek to lay claim to their Crystal artifact, the Magic Team is called to duty to defend their nation… and much political intrigue and personal drama ensues.

Directed by the same guy (Hijime Tabata) who made Before Crisis: Final Fantasy VIII, Type-0 was created as an entry-way point to understanding the whole mythos of the Fabula Nova Crystallis universe.

Definitely keep your eye on the game if you are a Final Fantasy or RPG fan. It sounds like we’ll see Final Fantasy Type-0 in 2015, as no release date or further details on improvements were given.
