Octodad’s existence is a constant struggle, as he must master mundane tasks with his unwieldy boneless tentacles while simultaneously keeping his cephalopodan nature a secret from his human family. — Opposing the octopus are scores of staircases, boxes of banana peels, and one intense sushi chef.

Octodad: Dadliest Catch Walkthrough

In this sequel to the splash hit Octodad, our cephaloprotagonist has gotten himself in a bind between his wife’s mounting mistrust, and a disastrous trip to the local aquarium! Are you dad enough to control the titular octopus father as he strives to hide his nautical nature from his family while keeping his tangled tentacles intact?

In Octo-ber 2010, a group of university students released the original Octodad into the world. Despite everyone being convinced that the game was about a normal human dad, the game was a cult hit, gained critical acclaim, and was an Independent Games Festival Student Finalist in 2011. Octodad received enough attention that the team decided to run a Kickstarter, form the game studio Young Horses, and create a bigger, better, more polished game about Octodad. Two and a half years after beginning production, Octodad: Dadliest Catch is ready to flop awkwardly into your arms.

Key Game Features:

  • Octodad’s wacky physics create hilarious moments that are different every time. Be surprised by the randomness of Octodad’s flailing or express your own sense of humor by making Octodad do silly things.
  • An all-new adventure that explores Octodad’s world, relationships and backstory.
  • Complete Octodad’s sartorial style by collecting and wearing a variety of hidden neckties.
  • Gather family members and/or friends to control Octodad’s limbs in co-op mode with 2 to 4 players. Up to 4 times the limbsanity!
  • XGain access to the (Windows Only) level editor that the Young Horses used to create Octodad: Dadliest Catch. Create your own ridiculous levels for Octodad to squish and flop through and submit them to Steam Workshop.
  • Play mod levels created by the Steam community and the creators of Octodad on Steam Workshop. (PC/Mac/Linux)
  • Experience Dadliest Catch’s unique control scheme with various control inputs, including X360, DualShock4, Mouse + Keyboard, Mac multitouch trackpad, Windows 8 touchscreens, DirectInput, and XInput controllers which all can be remapped to any configuration a player may want.

Frequently Asked Questions

How did you guys come up with the idea for Octodad?

We weren’t on drugs, at the time. We’ve described this so many times it’s in multiple interviews. Seth Parker, Audio Composition/Design: “We had pitched for three days of basic ideas… one page pitches. So… we split up into teams of three and four and basically sat around for an entire day, banging our heads against the wall, trying to come up with eight-page pitches to bring back to the team… John Murphy, one of the artists and I were in a group together and we were like, ‘okay lets just go crazy.’ Somebody said something that reminded me of Descartes so I was like, ‘what if you were kind of a passenger in your own body?’ And then someone was like, ‘what if you were driving your own body?’ ‘What if you’re a guy inside a robot and you were driving them?’ ‘What if you’re an octopus in your head?’ ‘Well, what if you’re just an octopus?’ And that was how it happened.”

Do I need to play the first Octodad to enjoy this one?

Nope! We built this game to stand alone from our original game, which is why we didn’t call it Octodad 2. We’ve made so many improvements that we’d actually prefer you skip the original and start with Dadliest Catch!

How long is the game?

A single playthrough is generally 3-4 hours for a new player. Replayability is encouraged by collecting hidden ties in the levels and trying to beat dev times through speedrunning. Additional, free download content is supported through Steam Workshop.

What is the difference between this and the original, free Octodad?

In ‘Dadliest Catch’, Octodad actually visits locations outside his house and interacts with people other than his family. On a technical level, it has more complex physics, polished graphics, and a ton of extra content not found in the original Octodad.

We’ve also taken time to really focus on the storytelling in the game. We want to expose a bit more of Octodad’s universe to help players better understand his world. Don’t worry though, as many things are still shrouded in mystery.

I thought this was a PlayStation 4 game, why is it on Steam first?

When we originally started this project, we did a Kickstarter promising PC/Mac/Linux. Sony has been tremendous to work with, allowing us to keep our promise to our original backers without delaying all releases until the PS4 version is ready.

What is the difference between this and the one coming to PlayStation 4?

The Steam version contains support for Workshop and support for a variety of different input devices. The PlayStation 4 version has support for Move, can easily share recorded game footage, and allows for remote play on PlayStation Vita.

What languages are supported?

At launch we will support English, Spanish, and Russian. We are currently working on translations for German, French, Portuguese, and others. Additional languages may come in later updates. Community-sourced translation submissions are welcome!

Where can I get the soundtrack?

The soundtrack is being prepared and will be available to purchase soon. Please check back here in the future! For now the theme song is available here:

What is co-op mode?

Co-op mode allows multiple people to control the limbs of Octodad simultaneously. Up to four people can play, each controlling one limb or more. Different combinations can allow different types of play. A two-player setup can allow someone to play as they would with a gamepad, where the second player can simultaneously control the left arm (which is normally not accessible with single player). There is also a ‘roulette mode’ which will switch up who controls what after completing objectives.

In this first chapter “a normal human gets read for his big day!” Ooooh boy…

Chapter 2: Home Sweet Home

In the second chapter “fatherly deeds are done in broad daylight.” I’m sure no one will suspect a thing…

Chapter 3: Grocery Shopping

From here on out Doug will be giving you voice-over tips — family friendly at that — so get ready for more fun!

Skip to 25:30 minutes into the video guide to start the third chapter titled “Grocery Shopping”.

Chapter 4: Aquarium

Octodad has gotten himself in a bind between his wife’s mounting mistrust, and must now take a hopefully-not-too-disastrous trip to the local aquarium! Manipulate his body like a squishy marionette to maintain the masquerade, as too much suspicion from the proper populace will doom him to sleep with the fishes!

Tip: Marine biologists at the Aquarium know a fish when they see one! Keep out of their sight or else!

Chapter 5: Fishing Boat & Ending

Octodad without his suit!? Say it ain’t so!! Octodad must avoid the fishermen on the fishing boat to stay alive. Get a suit from the captain’s cabin to carry on with your adventure and reunite with your family! But not before you face the Sushi Chef final boss fight.

Skip to 8:50 minutes into the video guide to start the final chapter titled “Fishing Boat”.

The End.

PS: His daughter’s reaction near the ending was my favorite moment in the game. 😆

Thanks to Young Horses, PewDiePie & Doug for the walkthrough videos.
