Contrast Walkthrough

Intro.

Contrast is a 2D/3D puzzle/platformer, set in a 1920’s vaudevillian, film noir dreamscape, full of cabaret, illusion and performance.

You play as Dawn, the imaginary friend of a little girl, Didi, and you have the power to shift from the 3D world into a 2D shadowscape, by becoming your shadow.

Didi’s family isn’t perfect – her mother is a cabaret singer focused on her career, and her father isn’t around any more. As her imaginary best friend, you must use your shadow shifting abilities to solve complex puzzles, in order to help Didi investigate the secrets that lie behind her troubled family.

Story.

Our story begins in the early 1920s in Didi’s bedroom. Didi is an independent, adventure-loving, spirited little girl who lives with her mother, Kat. Her father, Johnny, left Didi and Kat some time ago, but Didi yearns for her father’s return every day and compensates for his absence through Dawn, a friend, who always seems to be by Didi’s side when no one else is around.

As a single mother, Kat is doing everything she can to raise her daughter. She has been working hard for months to earn her spot as the headline act at the most popular venue in town: the Ghost Note Cabaret. Tonight is her big night, and possibly her last chance to secure top billing… but that means leaving Didi at home…alone.

In and around town, there’s a rumor that Johnny is back in town, trying to promote something big – a circus that is as entertaining as it is ambitious. But to do this, Johnny needs the help of the Great Vincenzo, the famous magician, to headline the show and draw some big crowds. Without Vincenzo’s help, Johnny could find himself in big trouble, as this deal isn’t exactly above board.

And this is where your adventure begins. As Dawn, Didi’s imaginary friend, you will step into the world of Contrast just as Kat puts Didi to bed and prepares for her big night at the Ghost Note.

Key Game Features:

  • Platforming: As you delve into the world of Contrast, you will experience the events surrounding Didi’s family through her eyes. The City that Didi lives in becomes a playground where numerous puzzles, enigmas and platform sequences take place.
  • Special Powers: Dawn, like all imaginary friends, has her own special powers. She can become her shadow, and shift between the 3D and 2D worlds, as the situation requires. You should therefore exploit the shadows and shapes you have created by parachuting Dawn into a world of 2D shadows and back again!
  • Shadow Puzzling: As you roam around in 3D, you move through the different backdrops in Contrast, and must use all your inventiveness to solve puzzles and access locations that may initially appear impossible to reach. The City and its surrounding areas have a large number of light sources that can be exploited to create shadows. Use objects and elements in the décor to create your own shadow scenes – for example, the shadow of a bicycle wheel cast on the wall becomes a staircase to reach a higher platform. Distort these shadows in any way you like to create a path that can only be accessed in the shadow world!
  • Child’s Perspective: Contrast provides a unique atmosphere, where magic and the dream-like universe become blurred in a little girl’s imagination, as her life is turned upside down by her day-to-day existence and her parents’ separation. Her daily life and the challenges she faces with her mother are visually represented to convey the feelings of this 9 year-old girl.
  • Film Noir: Contrast borrows from film noir – from style and tone to the performance, we tell the story of a protagonist who is in a tight spot faced with difficult decisions. Sinister motives, infidelity, betrayal and jealousy are the essential elements of the genre, and are imaginatively reflected in the world of Contrast.
  • Cabaret: Contrast also takes a number of influences from vaudeville, a genre of performance and levity, full of drama and interspersed with poetic moments and songs that echo the thoughts of 9 year-old Didi. The cabaret ambiance envelops you in Contrast and has a very special place in Didi’s heart, as her mother is the star of the most famous venue in town, the Ghost Note. — These genres combine seamlessly in Contrast; delivering a form of artistry that transforms a dark town in the late ‘20s into an enchanting place full of magic and poignancy.
  • Soundtrack: Contrast carries a moody ambience that will whisk you away to an exquisite world embodied by the jazz music. The melody caresses you throughout the adventure; each song and composition reflecting and amplifying the challenges Dawn and Didi face. — The sublime Laura Ellis provides the sultry singing voice of Kat.
