Heavenly Sword Movie Announced

Remember when Sony announced the Ratchet & Clank Movie a few days ago? Well, they also snuck in an announcement for the Heavenly Sword Movie! Five years after the 2007 PS3 game came out, the CG movie has entered post-production.

To quote Variety: “In addition to “Ratchet & Clank,” Blockade Entertainment is also producing “Heavenly Sword,” a CG-animated film based on the videogame that will be distributed direct-to-homevideo.”

Anna Torv did the voice acting and motion capture for Heavenly Sword‘s Nariko in the PlayStation 3-exclusive, and according to the IMDB she’ll be back for the movie. Good thing that she just finished her 5-year-run on the popular Fringe TV show, right in time to bring Nariko back to life in the movie!

Although unconfirmed, another returning character is King Bohan who will be voiced by Alfred Molina, who’s replacing Andy Serkis; and a new character is Loki, voiced by Thomas Jane.

To get an idea of what the movie quality might look like, you can watch the Heavenly Sword game’s CGI TV commercial here:

Heavenly Sword game description: “A dramatic tale of revenge sees Nariko, a fiery red-haired heroine, embark on a quest for vengeance against an invading King and his army. The story builds around the ancient Heavenly Sword, which once belonged to a powerful deity. It can never be wielded by a mortal without it slowly but inevitably draining their life-force.

When the invading King (played by Andy Serkis) destroys the warrior clan that guards the Heavenly Sword, the clan leader’s daughter, Nariko, takes up the sword in a desperate fight for survival. Nariko must now pay the ultimate price as she embarks on one last mission of vengeance against the King and his army before her life is finally and irreparably overtaken by the omnipotent Heavenly Sword..”

Note for fans: With the story for the Heavenly Sword 2 game (of the initially planned trilogy) already having been written back in 2010, but never made into a game (that we know of), this movie is a welcome return to the franchise.

Since Nariko and her sidekick sister Kai appear in PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, there’s still a chance for a game sequel since it means they are keeping the characters alive. I really hope Sony surprises us at E3 in June with a reveal that they are working on Heavenly Sword 2 internally for PlayStation 4. What? Unrealistic? I can dream, right!?
