Activision-Blizzard have confirmed an Diablo 3 Expansion Pack is in development at the studio. During an investors earnings call Blizzard president Mike Morhaime spoke briefly about the expansion. It was also confirmed that they sold 10 million copies of Diablo 3!
Mr. Morhaime answered a question about whether or not Blizzard will follow up Diablo 3 with an expansion pack a year after Diablo 3’s release, like it did with previous games in the Diablo series.
“We do have a plan, an expansion plan for Diablo.” -Blizzard president Mike Morhaime
To quote his answer: “We do have a plan, an expansion plan for Diablo. I don’t have any timeline to talk about. I think that the most important thing for us always comes down to the quality of the expansion, of the gameplay, and so that will be a big factor in terms of driving our schedule.”
A since-aged release schedule leaked from Blizzard two years ago scheduled the Diablo 3 expansion pack release date for Q2 2013, and even listed a second expansion pack for Q4 2014! Similar to a proposed rollout of the two StarCraft 2 expansion packs.
Other mentions included:
- That they hope to release StarCraft 2: Heart of the Swarm in the first half of 2013.
- The studio’s working on a Multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game similar to DOTA titled Blizzard All-Stars.
To quote: “Blizzard All-Stars is in development, and we’re doing some great work. Some internal testing is under way. We’re doing a lot of things to experiment with game play, and I don’t really have anything concrete to announce on this call, other than we’re very excited about the game.”
I imagine before releasing the expansion they would first want to add the promised Player Versus Player arenas to Diablo 3. Since that got cut from the game at launch in May earlier this year. Fans have been impatiently waiting to get their full game’s worth. In fact, many fans left because of launch issues, but that didn’t stop them from making jokes about it like this “What if Diablo were a girl?” comedy…
