World of Warcraft Movie Loses Director Sam Raimi

Movie director Sam Raimi (of the Spider-Man Trilogy fame) has confirmed at Comic-Con 2012 that he’s no longer involved with the planned World of Warcraft Movie, because he had to start work on his upcoming Oz: The Great and Powerful movie.

The good news despite that Raimi’s off the project is that the World of Warcraft movie team said they had to move on with the project, thus needed a director as soon as possible. Not surprising, since the WoW movie’s been planned since 2007!

To quote Sam Raimi from the interview video below:

“Actually, they don’t have me directing World of Warcraft anymore because when I took the Oz job, they had to move on to another director. […] They had to start making it.”

Here’s the Sam Raimi IGN interview from Comic-Con 2012:

Take a look at one of Blizzard’s amazing World of Warcraft: Cataclysm cinematics.

I don’t understand why the developer Blizzard wouldn’t make it into a purely CGI movie produced in-house, like the games. The quality of their CGI cinematics in World of Warcraft and StarCraft II is out of the world!
