Deus Ex Movie Rights Go To CBS Films

CBS Films has optioned the rights to a Deus Ex Movie, based on the video game series from publisher Square Enix. CBS Films have announced they will work closely with the Deus Ex: Human Revolution game developer Eidos-Montreal on the big-screen film version. As such, the Deus Ex Movie will revolve around the third installment in the game series, Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Roy Lee and Adrian Askarieh will produce.

Terry Press, co-president of CBS Films, had this to say:

“As is clear from the wild success of the game, Square Enix and Eidos-Montreal know how to exceed their audience’s expectations by engineering incredible worlds. No one knows ‘Human Revolution’ like the team that created it, and we look forward to working with them from day one to make a film adaptation worthy of the ‘Deus Ex’ name.”

Phil Rogers, president and CEO of Square Enix Europe, adds:

“As the millions of fans who have played the ‘Deus Ex’ games for more than a decade will tell you, these games catapult you into a universe that is stimulating, engaging and relevant. We’re firm believers in building strong partnerships, and so we’re thrilled to be working with CBS Films on bringing the unique ‘Deus Ex’ experience to the bigscreen.”

The story of the latest Deus Ex game, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, tells of a central theme in the world of 2027 that revolves around commercial power structures and their rise to prominence in the early 21st century. Multinational corporations have grown so large that they can no longer be controlled by traditional national governments, and start competing with each other (violently, I might add).

The Deus Ex Film will follow an ex-SWAT security specialist (presumably Adam Jensen from Deus Ex: Human Revolution) who must learn to embrace the high-tech prostheses that replace much of his body in order to unravel a global conspiracy that involves an attack on a biotechnology firm tied to developing human enhancements.

Take a look at the story the movie’s based on in the Deus Ex: Human Revolution launch trailer.

Variety adds that John P. Middleton will serve as executive producer of the project. Maria Faillace, executive VP of production, and creative executive Alex Ginno are overseeing the project for CBS Films.

Producer Adrian Askarieh has several film versions of videogames in the works, including a second “Hitman” pic, as well as adaptations of the “Just Cause” and “Kane and Lynch” videogames. All are Square Enix-produced titles. Producer Roy Lee is currently producing Warner Bros.’ “Lego: The Piece of Resistance”, “The 7500,” and a “The Woman in Black” sequel.

Deus Ex is such an incredibly rich world, I really do hope they can do it justice with the game creators involved directly. 🙂

Are you up for watching a Deus Ex Movie instead of controlling it yourself?
