With the release of Battlefield 3 on the horizon, here are some early story details, which we can expect to see in the newest installment!

Set in 2014, SSgt Blackburn leads a five-man squad on a mission to locate, find and safely return a US squad investigating a possible chemical weapons site, whose last known position was a market controlled by a hostile militia. After engaging in several gun battles, Blackburn and his squad are caught in a massive earthquake whose epicenter is in Iran. Later, Miller takes part in a tank assault upon an enemy rocket battery, before preparing to advance on what appears to be a burning city.

DICE’s David Goldfarb, lead designer on Battlefield 3, has been talking about the single player aspects of their new shooter and has promised a storyline that won’t be taking a leaf out of Modern Warfare’s book.

Goldfarb stated that: “It’s not about the competition. You’re always aware of what other people are doing, but I know I feel that when we made this game, there’s a certain point at which it becomes unbelievable. I think it’s really important for myself and for others to keep it within that place where it feels current and plausible, and to me there’s a very fine balance. We need to make it feel as though you could read a paper and feel this could have happened. That’s what’s actually informing the requirements of the story: even if it is ridiculous, would you buy it in a credibility sense? That’s been a big part of why we’ve done stuff. And it has been very different in that way.”

The Battlefield blog itself states that the single player storyline will be revealed through flashbacks as Henry “Black” Blackburn races to prevent an attack on New York by the PLR. The blog also announced that players can take control of several characters in “heart-pounding missions across land, sea and air.”

The single-player campaign is said to be inspired by multiple war movies such as Generation Kill, Hurt Locker and Black Hawk Down. There will be a focus on the characters’ personalities and dialog, and there will be a variety of single-player mission available.

These will include:

  • “Thunder Run”: revealed at E3 2011, this time, the player will control Corporal Jonathan “Jono” Miller of the 1st Marine Tank Battalion as they engage and destroy PLR armor in the Dasht-e Kavir desert in Iran. At the time of this mission, at least, the game is set in October 31, 2014.
  • A Russian undercover agent: named Dmitri “Dima” Mayakovsky, the player must fight their way from the Paris Stock Exchange onto the crowded city streets in an attempt to stop People’s Liberation and Resistance operatives from detonating a dirty bomb in the heart of Paris.
  • “The Longest Hour”: with the difficulty setting being Normal, this mission confirms the return of campaign difficulty settings.

According to a Battlelog screenshot, there are 12 or more missions to be announced!

EA Digital Illusions CE’s upcoming first person shooter is due to be released on the PC (windows), PS3 and Xbox 360 platform on October 25th (US), October 28th (EU) and October 27th (AUS) 2011! It will be the eleventh installment in the Battlefield franchise and a direct sequel to Battlefield 2.
