Rhythm Thief & The Emperor’s Treasure (known in Japan as “Rhythm Thief R: Emperor Napoleon’s Legacy”, a name they thankfully changed) has been announced by Sega and developer Sonic Team as an all-new Rhythm music game that also mixes in action adventure gameplay elements.

The game promises “stylish dance scenes” that the player must partake in as a sort of mini-game between bouts of action-adventure gameplay.

“Rhythm games will be incorporated in scenes where you sneak around museums and art galleries, and scenes where you’re plotting your escape from pursuers,” says Famitsu. “Press buttons with accurate timing and tilt the console to clear the rhythm games, and the story will progress. By demonstrating your natural sense of rhythm you can overcome all kinds of adversity.”

The game will also have a deep storyline where an 18-year-old Parisian boy named Ralph leads a night life of thievery as the infamous “R”. By day he lives a quiet life with his pet dog Fondue.

R is infamous for stealing pricey jewels, but then returning them days later. Show off he is.

However three years before the story begins, the coffin of Napoleon is stolen from the Les Invalides tomb, and authorities immediately blame R for the act.

The game opens up with Ralph seeking to steal the Bracelet of Tiamat being exhibited in the Louvre, it is engraved with a crest that apparently matches a gold coin that belonged to R’s missing father.

Here is a trailer for Rhythm Thief.

The developers promise that the search for R’s father will take him through many real-life locations including the famous Notre Dame cathedral.

Gameplay scenes will include crazy scenes such as avoiding police in pursuit via running across rooftops, where you must time the A Button to jump and the B Button to slide away from their helicopters; hiding amongst statues by quickly dodging enemy attack via mimicing the statue’s pose, done by tilting the 3DS; and even facing off against an armored knight, whom you must attack to the left or right by timing button presses of the D-Pad and A Button.

Even Ralph’s pet dog, Fondue (I love him already!) will join in on the action, although how he will be involved exactly wasn’t revealed.

The game will include songs by famous artists, although these too were kept under wraps. StreetPass and local download play for multiplayer of some sort will be supported as well.

Rhythm Thief & The Emperor’s Treasure will be released in Japan this Winter and in the West in 2012.

That’ll give us two very interesting 3DS rhythm games, the other being Final Fantasy: Theatrythm.

Here are some more screenshots of this awesome looking and very unique 3DS game! It definitely looks like a winner! What do you think?
