3DS price drop in 2011 to $170 from $250 at launch

A 3DS price drop 2011 has been announced! Own a Nintendo 3DS yet? No? Good, now’s the time to buy! Price cut FTW!

Nintendo has announced that their flagship handheld glasses-free stereoscopic 3D game system (say that three times fast) has been slashed in price to $170 in America from a high of $250 at launch.

This marks an incredible -$80 cut, saving the consumer 30% over the previous launch price. This drastic and abrupt price drop will go into effect on a fast-approaching August 12th worldwide, and is meant to bolster sales of the system which have been way behind expectations and sales projections for Nintendo.

“For anyone who was on the fence about buying a Nintendo 3DS, this is a huge motivation to buy now,” said Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. “We are giving shoppers every incentive to pick up a Nintendo 3DS, from an amazing new price to a rapid-fire succession of great games.”

In Europe the price cut will be “around a third” (retailers set the prices). In Australia the price has been cut to AU $249.95 from $349.95, with the New Zealand price being NZ $343.99. In Japan the cut is 15,000 Yen down from 25,000 Yen.

Nintendo also announced a revised earnings forecast for the fiscal year ending March 2012, dropping its estimated profit to ¥20 billion ($257M), an 82 percent drop from the ¥110 billion ($1.41B) it expected. Ouch.

Now here is a 3DS commercial for your amusement.

Will you now be buying a 3DS thanks to the pricecut?

Wow! That was totally unexpected! I will definitely buy one in the future. I think you forgot to mention that current owners of the 3DS will receive 20 Virtual Console games which includes 10 NES games and 10 exclusive Game Boy Advance games for free! So, when you think about it, it is an incentive to buy now or wait until the price drop! -Xou Moua

It is GREAT news indeed! Although I feel somewhat sad for those who just bought a 3DS and are only now seeing the 2011 price drop for it. It’s such a huge price cut though, the mind boggles. Actually I purposefully didn’t include that news about the Ambassador Program for the free games because I was going to put it in a separate article. I’ll probably do that tomorrow, was busy today on other site features. :)

This is why I rarely buy anything day of.  If you show a bit of patience then it almost always pays off. :)

@Photographer_Leia:disqus Yeah because dont I feel the plum now for buying early this is starting to feel like iPhone syndrome, you pay full price 2 months later a newer bigger model and they drop the price of the one you have. But there is the bonus of the free titles coming up but I’d rather have had a cheaper 3DS

I couldn’t agree more Leia, although at least those who did buy early will get some totally kickass Game Boy Advance Virtual Console games for their 3DS for FREE! While the 2011 3DS price drop is a big deal and quite the hardship for new purchasers, I think Nintendo went quite far in making up for the price cut-less 3DS buyers by giving them 20 free games. That’s pretty huge I think. Though I’m glad to have my 3DS. :)
