Notable this month:

  • The 3DS charted for the first time with the highly anticipated “killer-app”, a remake of the 1998 megaton classic, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, debuting at #5 in the Top 10.
  • InFamous 2 did really well, better than expected, charting at #3 on the list. Very high and a very strong showing for a PS3-exclusive.
  • In a big surprise (to some), and a non-surprise (to others), the highly panned, low review-scoring “mess of a game” known as Duke Nukem Forever, one of the most highly anticipated and legendary games of all time (in development since 1996!) managed to chart with a “Hail to the King, Baby” #2 spot. Its namesake and legendary status, the curiosity players had over it (not to mention anticipation), and probably the high marketing, propelled the title to the number 2 spot on the Top Ten despite the pleas of reviewers urging gamers to stay far away. It will be interesting to see where it charts next month and whether or not it can be considered any kind of real financial success. But Gearbox must be extremely happy. Could this mean we’ll DEFINITELY see MORE Duke? Most likely.
  • Lego Pirates of the Caribbean did very well, charting at #4 despite being a movie tie-in to the Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides film.
  • Due to the NBA Finals raging on, the Michael Jordan-starring NBA 2K11 was risen back from the dead to chart at #7, despite being released in October of last year.
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops and Just Dance 2 cannot be defeated, as both games charted at #6 and #10 respectively.
  • Nobably Absent: Shadows of the Damned, Alice: Madness Returns and Child of Eden all failed to make the top 10. I.Is.Sad.

Total game sales overall (PC, console, handheld and software sales) were down 10 percent compared to this time last year, nearly a double-digit decline across the board. Amazingly, L.A. Noire continues to be a hotcake seller, topping the charts for two months in a row! Quite the feat for Rockstar, and once again proof that not only is everything Rockstar touches golden, but unique and new experiences, and quite-simply top-quality videogame products, CAN still sell and WILL sell if marketed good enough and a pedigree from the developer/publisher is there. Once again the spit-polish, time and effort put into L.A. Noire to make it such a high quality game and unique experience has paid off for Rockstar Games and Take Two.

Total Industry Sales – $1.03 billion USD (-10% from last year)
Console Hardware Sales – $366.6 million USD (-9% from last year)
Console Software Sales – $469.5 million USD (-12% from last year)
Total Software Sales – $508.9 million USD (-10% from last year)
Accessory Sales – $158.9 million USD (-11% from last year)

Here is a trailer of L.A. Noire.

Wondering about hardware system sales? Here is the breakdown.

    1. Xbox 360 – 507,000 units sold
    2. DS – 386,000 units sold
    3. PS3 – ~276,000 (extrapolated)
    4. Wii – 273,000 units sold
    5. 3DS – 143,000 units sold

Once again the Xbox 360 came out on top, this time Super Saiyaning itself to sell an astounding half-a-million units. Mighty, MIGHTY impressive. Beastly even. While the 3DS brings up the rear (although technically that spot probably goes to the PSP, who’s numbers weren’t released). The big surprise is the regular DS, who is still going extremely strong, selling enough units to put it in second place right behind the Xbox 360, and way ahead of the PS3 and Wii. Once again Wii sales have hit rock bottom.

Here are quotes from each respective console manufacturer:

    Nintendo PR
After less than two weeks on store shelves, The Legend of Zelda™: Ocarina of Time™ 3D for the Nintendo 3DS™ portable entertainment system finished the month as the No. 2 best-selling video game on an individual platform, with more than 283,000 units sold, according to the independent NPD Group, which tracks video game sales in the United States.

Other highlights from the month include:
Nintendo sold more than 800,000 combined hardware units in June. This includes 386,000 units of the Nintendo DS™ family of systems, 273,000 Wii™ systems and 143,000 Nintendo 3DS systems. Each product line saw double-digit growth over the previous month, and the lifetime U.S. installed base for the Wii system crossed 36 million units. Five of the top 10 and 13 of the top 25 best-selling individual software titles play on Nintendo platforms.

This holiday season, Nintendo will offer something for everyone with fan-favorite titles including Super Mario?, Mario Kart, Kid Icarus: Uprising, Star Fox 64 3D and The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword.

    Microsoft PR
Halfway through 2011, Xbox 360 maintains its lead in the U.S. console market, selling more units in the U.S. than any other console for 12 of the past 13 months. Even while console and software sales across the industry have slowed, as often happens in the summer, Xbox 360 continues growing, staying on track to have the biggest year in Xbox history in the sixth year of its lifecycle.

    June 2011 NPD highlights include:
Holding 48% share of the overall current-generation console market share, Xbox 360 sold 507,000 units in June, selling nearly twice as many units as other current-generation platforms and maintaining the number-one console spot in the U.S. for 2011. Additionally, Xbox 360 was the only console in the U.S. to show year-over-year growth in the month of June. (Source: NPD Group, June 2011)
Total retail spend on the Xbox 360 platform in June (hardware, software and accessories) reached $350 million, the most for any console in the U.S. (Source: NPD Group, June 2011)
During the month of June, four of the top ten console game titles were for Xbox 360 including: “L.A. Noire,” “Duke Nukem Forever,” “NBA 2K11” and “Call of Duty: Black Ops.” (Source: NPD Group, June 2011)

With the holiday season and major launches just around the corner, the second half of 2011 promises to make Xbox 360 history. The size of the Kinect games portfolio will triple by the end of the year and Xbox will bring new partnerships like UFC and Disney to the platform as well as blockbuster games, movies, music and TV together in one place. We expect Xbox 360 to maintain its lead and to be number one worldwide by the end of the year, selling more hardware units than PlayStation and Wii.

    Sony PR
“According to the latest NPD report, PlayStation continues to see growth in software with a strong demand for exclusive PlayStation 3 franchise titles. The recently launched inFAMOUS 2 was the #1 software SKU in June. In addition, momentum is accelerating with the upcoming fall releases of Resistance 3 and Uncharted 3 on the horizon. This week the Uncharted 3 multiplayer beta surpassed 1.5 million unique players, demonstrating the strength of the PlayStation platform and consumers’ interest in gaming experiences that combine rich stories, challenging gameplay, and exhilarating 3D immersion,” Patrick Seybold, Sr. Director of Corporate Communications at SCEA.
