The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Heart Pieces Guide. How to find all 36 heart piece locations

All 36 Heart Container locations in this Zelda: Ocarina of Time guide
This The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Heart Pieces Guide shows the 36 hidden heart piece locations throughout the many lands of Hyrule.

You’ll be able to find and collect your first Heart Piece early on in the game during your first outing to Lon Lon Ranch once you leave Kokori Forest for the first time as Young Link.

As in all previous Zelda games, in Ocarina of Time you will earn a new Heart Container at the end of each boss battle (giving you one new full heart added to your Heart Meter at the upper left of the screen) and then can add additional Hearts by collecting four Heart Pieces. Finding four secret Pieces of Heart will add up to one new container and increase your life. And you can’t complete the game 100% unless you find all 36 Heart Pieces!

Thankfully we are here to help! Below you will find the location of each and every hidden Heart Piece and exactly how to find them.

This video shows you more Heart Piece locations.

Here are the final Heart Piece locations!

Heart Pieces Locations #1-36

Heart Container #1
Location: Lon-Lon Ranch
Time: Young Link
Difficulty: Easy
Requirements: Nothing
Head to the back of Lon Lon Ranch where you’ll see a door you can enter behind the fenced in section with the horses. Enter the door and you’ll be in a storage room with some cows and a group of boxes. Behind the boxes is a small hole you can climb through. Start by pulling the three boxes away to the edge. Enter the hole and claim your Piece of Heart!

Heart Container #2
Location: Kakariko Village Graveyard
Time: Young Link
Difficulty: Easy
Requirements: Nothing (Sun’s Song makes it easier)
Head to the top of the graveyard where you’ll find the emblem of the Hyrule Royal Family (A Triforce symbol). From the Royal Family’s Tomb, turn around so that you are facing the lightning and the Windmill in the distance. You’ll see five tombs before you. You’ll notice that the second tomb from the left has flowers planted directly in front of it. This marks it as a special tomb that holds a secret. Pull the tomb from the back to reveal a hole. Fall inside. You’ll find a Redead zombie enemy. Play the Sun’s Song to stune it if you have the song (obtained inside the Royal Family’s Tomb by playing Zelda’s Lullaby on the Triforce symbol) and kill the zombie. This will reveal a Treasure Chest holding a Heart Piece inside.

Heart Container #3
Location: Lost Woods
Time: Young Link
Difficulty: Hard
Requirements: Fairy Ocarina
Inside of the Lost Woods atop Kokori Forest, head to the right tunnel from the entrance, and you’ll find a target that you can shoot at (Use your Slingshot and hit the bullseye 3 times to win a big Deku Seed bag allowing you to carry more Deku Seed ammo). Hope down below or take the ladder and you’ll find a stump you can stand on. Stand atop it and pull out your Ocarina. This will make two musical Skull Kids appear, they’ll then play a string of notes that you must copy exactly. Successfully play three sessions and you’ll win a Heart Piece. Each session will get more difficult than the last, although the songs will get easier if you keep failing. Good luck! Note that it’s much easier to win at this if you write down the notes as they play them.

Heart Container #4
Location: Lost Woods
Time: Young Link
Difficulty: Easy
Requirements: Ocarina, Saria’s Song
Head through the left tunnel directly from the entrance to the Lost Woods and you’ll see a lone tree stump you can stand atop not far from a much taller stump. Stand on it and pull out your Ocarina. This will make a Skull Kid appear who wants to hear a song. In order to earn this Piece of Heart you’ll need Saria’s Song. Obtain it by reaching the Hidden Forest Meadow at the far back of the Lost Woods and talking to Saria. Play Saria’s Song for the Skull Kid and he’ll offer you this fourth Heart Piece. Woot woot!

Heart Container #5
Location: Goron City
Time: Young Link
Difficulty: Medium
Requirements: Deku Sticks, Bombs/Bomb Bag and Goron’s Bracelet (Easier with Din’s Fire)
Although you may be able to earn this Heart Piece without acquiring the Bomb Bag in Dodongo’s Cavern, it is not recommended. Getting the Goron’s Bracelet from Darunia will allow you to lift Bomb Plants, but being able to pull out Bomb’s at will with the Bomb Bag you can find in Dodongo’s Cavern will make this much easier. To earn this Heart Piece, head down to Darunia’s room at the very bottom of Goron City behind the giant Goron Statue in the center of the room. You’ll notice unlit torches around the room. If you haven’t opened Darunia’s Room door, and it is sealed, you can open it by playing Zelda’s Lullaby on your Fairy Ocarina while standing on the “plush carpet” in front of the door. Use Deku Sticks and light one with the lit torch in Darunia’s room by the exit. As soon as you’ve lit it, run out and run with the stop of the stick so it touches the tops of the unlit torches, lighting them. If your stick starts to burn, quickly put it away and take out another and continue lighting the torches. Alternatively you can light them all easily by using Din’s Fire. Once all of them are lit the statue in the center will start spinning around. Toss a bomb inside (which can be difficult) by throwing it from the level above. Doing this will make the statue quickly spin around until it lands on one of three faces. It must land on the smiling face in order for you to earn this Heart Piece, which will come flying out of the top of the Goron Statue. If you get the wrong face, keep trying until you earn the Heart Piece.

Heart Piece #6
Location: Death Mountain Crater
Time: Young Link
Difficulty: Easy
Requirements: Nothing
Enter Death Mountain Crater as Young Link by ascending Death Mountain along the top trail where flaming debre falls from the sky. Climb the wall to the very top, where you’l find a cave entrance to the right of the Wise Owl along with a bombable wall to the left. The left leads to a Great Fairy of Power whereas the right leads to Death Mountain Crater. Enter the cave and run or roll as quick as you can to the edge. Run off the edge and instead of falling link will grab onto to the side. You can then climb down to an alcove that holds this Heart Piece.

Heart Piece #7
Location: Kakariko Village
Time: Young Link
Difficulty: Easy
Requirements: Nothing
When playing as a Child, climb up to where the entrance to Death Mountain Crater is where you’ll find the Wise Owl atop Death Mountain waiting for you. Talk to him until he offers you a ride, then stand close to him under his talons and Link will automatically grab onto them for an awesome first-person ride directly to Karkirko Village where you’ll be dropped atop Impa’s House. From here you can drop down the right side (right from facing the front of the “triangle”) onto a ledge. Alternatively you can look in first-person (C-Up, C-Stick Up or tap the “look” eyeball icon in the upper-lefthand of the touchscreen depending on what version you’re playing) while standing at the very edge to make sure you see the ledge. Then walk slowly so that Link hangs on the ledge and press the A Button or B Button to drop down to the ledge then go inside. You’ll find the Heart Piece beside a mooing cow!

Heart Piece #8
Location: Castle Town MARKET
Time: Young Link
Difficulty: Hard
Requirements: None
Go into the “Bombchu Bowling Alley” at the Market during the daytime once it has opened for business. You’ll then be able to play “Bombchu Bowling” and win a number of prizes which are shown to you before you start the minigame. If its not the Heart Piece then simply exit and re-enter to try again until you get the Heart Piece. Other prizes include Bombchus, Bombs, a larger Bomb Bag, or a Purple Rupee with 50 Rupees. Now for the hard part. You must get the Bombchu into the hole without hitting any of the obstacles or straying too far to the right or left without hitting the bulseye. This is tougher than it looks and while sometimes you’ll get it without a hitch, othertimes you aren’t so lucky. It’s all about timing and aiming correctly. Make small adjustments to the right or left on the analog stick to point Link and try to time it so the Cuccos are far enough away or just moved from the target. Good luck!

Heart Piece #9
Location: Market
Time: Young Link
Difficulty: Easy
Requirements: None
At night enter the Hyrule Castle Town Market (you can do this by standing at the road to Princess Zelda’s Castle and waiting for it to turn dark or by playing the Sun’s Song) and you’ll notice that dogs are roaming all around the market. If you touch or get close to a certain dog, it will start following you until you touch another dog, bring it to its owner, leave the area or enter a building. Obviously you want to find the correct dog and bring it to its owner at the Back Alley. The dog you want is white and is located behind the booth to the left of the exit leading back to Hyrule Field. Touch it so it starts to follow you and then enter the Back Alley to the right of the exit (that leads to Hyrule Field) and enter the second door. Give “Little Richard” to the lady and you’ll earn yourself this Piece of Heart.

Heart Piece #10
Location: Zora’s River
Time: Young Link
Difficulty: Easy
Requirements: Cucco
You’ll find this Piece of Heart high atop a platform at Zora’s River, a platform that can be reached as Young Link by using the Cuccoo chicken-like birds. You’ll find one near the beginning of Zora’s River before you reach the fat guy selling Magic Beans. Grab that Cuccoo and take him all the way through the the normal route without jumping in the water. When you get to a ledge toss the Cucoo up, then climb up and quickly grab it while it stands hopping (if it starts walking off he’ll be harder to gnab again). Once you reach the ground where divided by the river that leads up to the entrance to Zora’s Domain, turn around and look at the high ground across from you. You’ll notice that there is a piece of ground running across the side that is seemingly unreachable. Well you can reach it with the Cuccoo! Hop off the platform and float to the far platform. Throw the Cuccoo in the water and he’ll automaticlly fly up to the top. Climb the ladder to reach the platform. From here grab another Cucoo and float to the far platform across the bridge. Keep holding the Cucoo and from there float down to the lower platform that holds the Heart Piece. You’re home free! Thanks Cuccoo! Alternatively you can also use Young Link’s Boomerang to bring the Heart Piece to you from a nearby platform, or use the Hover Boots or Hookshoot as Adult Link. But where’s the fun in that? CUCOOOOO!

Heart Piece #11
Location: Zora’s River
Time: Young Link
Difficulty: Easy
This Piece of Heart is also located at Zora’s River, except this time it is found outside of the entrance to Zora’s Domain, at the heart of the waterfall. You’ll notice there are a few platforms, a ladder, and ledges near the entrance. On the opposite side of the waterpole portal (which takes you to the Lost Woods once you find the Silver Scale to dive far enough), you’ll see a square platform a bit away from you that contains a Heart Piece. But how to reach it? You can get it using a Cuccoo (the one at the beginning of Zoara’s River) to float to it, or you can simply throw Link’s Boomerang (obtainable inside Jabu Jabu’s Belly) and bringthe Heart Piece right to you. Alternatively you can grab it later on as Adult Link using the HOver Boots. But might as well get it while you’re young at heart! GET IT! BWA HA HA HA HAH.

Heart Piece #12
Location: Zora’s Domain
Time: Young Link
Difficulty: Easy
Requirements: Deku Sticks
Once you are inside Zora’s Domain (Play Zora’s Lullaby using your Ocarina at the Triforce symbol at the waterfall to enter) you’ll notice that there are a string of unlit torches leading away from the waterfall and up to King Zora’s Throne Room. From here, use a Deku Stick to and light it using the lit torch. Then quickly run to the unlit torch at the bottom of the stairs and light it. Put the Deku Stick away, take out another and then quickly roll to light all the unlit torches leading up to the waterfall as well as the two torches inside the waterfall. Doing so will make a Treasure Chest appear which holds this Heart Piece!

Heart Piece #13
Location: Lake Hylia
Time: Young Link
Difficulty: Medium to Very Hard
Requirements: None

If you can manage to catch a ten pound fish you will earn this Piece of Heart! Some skill, as well as luck, is involved. Sometimes you’ll manage a 10er on your first try, othertimes you won’t be so lucky. Just keep trying until you catch one.

Heart Piece #14
Location: Graveyard
Time: Young Link
Difficulty: Medium to Very Hard
Requirements: Lots of money and Patience! (Nothing)
As soon as night appears, head into Kakariko Village and make your way to the back to the Graveyard. If the time is between 18:00 and 21:00 (the guard at the entrance will tell youthe time if you talk to him), you will see a Gravekeeper milling about named Dampe. Besides giving you a special “boing!” item later on, he also mans the Graveyard mini-game called the “Heart-Pounding Grave Digging Tour”. Be sure you have ots of money before attempting this as it costs 10 Rupees a pop. Giving Dampe 10 rupees you can pay to have him dig at each of the patches of dirt-colored soil (don’t bother digging anywhere else). Eventually, you will hit the location of a hidden Heart Piece! Why is this very hard? Because it is random and sometimes you will dig forever and not find it (just Rupees). If it goes on forever and you don’t find the Piece of Heart, leave the area and try again later. Oh and if you stand further away with your back turned to Dampe he will walk. Simply have him walk to the dirt patches before running up to stop him. Good luck!

Then gently glid yourself down. Once on the strip of land, go as far as you can to the waterfall and leap towards it. Swim to the center and you’ll see a ladder. Take it up to get this Heart Piece.
