Does Wii U play GameCube games? Will GameCube games work on Wii U?

Does Wii U play GameCube? No it doesn't. Wave goodbye to the purple box that could!
Are you wondering if Wii U is backwards compatible with GameCube games?

Since the Nintendo Wii launched, the system has been able to play those wonderous small discs of joy from the GameCube era, something that has brought a lot of light into the darkness of those who missed many of the AAA quality games that the GameCube library offered. Or even those gamers who just want to pop in a classic from the 128-bit era and relive the modern glory days of last-gen.

Because the Wii U is fully backwards compatible with current-generation Wii games, many people have been wondering if the Wii U also supports and plays GameCube games.

Sadly, Nintendo has confirmed that the answer to that question is no. GameCube games will NOT work on Wii U. FOR SHAME!

However the Wii U does not release until 2012, so maybe Nintendo could still add it in if there was enough of a backlash. But considering how last-gen games were cut out of the DSi models (which couldn’t play Game Boy Advance games like the original DS as you can see in our DS Lite vs DSi comparison), it only makes sense that Nintendo would eventually cut out the “mostly no-longer played” GameCube library.

So the likelihood of them adding it back in due to fan feedback is slim.

What do you think about Wii U not playing GameCube games. Is it a mistake?

Now here is a video of the top 10 GameCube games according to ScrewAttack.

Gamecube games have to play on Wii U! Besides games on the Wii U virtual console, there just has to be Gamecube compatability! There are games on Gamecube we have never been able to play in HD, or on a controller with a touch screen!

Well of course thet will be on the Wii U, but you wont be able to play your GC discs.
They will be in the form of downloadable Virtual Console games. Seeing how 99.9% of the games are less than 1GB (and that’s before compression) it’s perfect for DLC.

Nintendo needs to eat you know! How do you expect them to live when we can buy used GC discs for $1 each in used bins. Jeesh! ;)

they should but the company probably is going that direction for more money like ps3 doesn’t play ps2 games (accept those 60 gb ones or whatever)

Hell No, Resident Evil Remake is the Best Game for Game Cube

Nintendo Virtual Console. Yes it would be nice of nintendo to let us register our old games to our accounts… but its not an expectation… Compare to ps3 and xbox360 Does nintendo really owe us anything? they’ve always created beautiful games, that have very little glitches on a console that responds, and is very organized and provides us with stuff like web browsers… Even if they don’t continue the GC games, they will put them in the shop… Now lets see the xbox 360, double the price, Web connectivity device sold separately(for $100), no free server play, no web browser, now we have apps, but all premium(youtube, facebook, twitter, netflix, etc)… Perhaps nintendo didnt give us HD but they gave us great story plots and very fun colorful games, along with backwards compatibility… which im sure will continue in some way on the wiiu
