A Mass Effect movie (anime feature film) is currently in development by Japanese studio T.O. Entertainment and FUNimation for release in 2012 announced BioWare.

The anime promises to offer everything that Mass Effects would want from a feature film by expanding on the fiction while spinning it in interesting new directions. The movie will be exectutive produced directly by BioWare’s Casey Hudson to ensure it is as authentic and close to what the many Mass Effect fans would want as possible.

The anime will feature a science fiction adventure “set in a vast universe filled with dangerous alien life and mysterious, uncharted planets.”

“Over the last few years, we have revealed different pieces of the Mass Effect world through different media. Extending the story through an anime medium is another amazing opportunity for us,” commented Casey Hudson. “Partnering with FUNimation ensures that we will bring this rich universe to life with the utmost quality and the same attention to detail that the Mass Effect games are known for.”

FUNimation is also working on a Dragon Age anime film as well that will extend that universe.

So how do you feel about animated feature films for videogames? EA has also been on the bandwagon creating film versions of Dante’s Inferno and Dead Space, and other studios have tried their hand as well including Ubisoft’s live-action Assassin’s Creed short films, Microsoft with the Halo Legends anime-collection, Capcom with Resident Evil: Degeneration and Resident Evil: Damnation and, of course, Square Enix with Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children.

Do you think these films are a good idea?

And now, for Mass Effect in 5 minutes.
