Rocksmith has been announced as an all-new music game from Ubisoft for Xbox 360 and PS3. Unlike past music games, Rocksmith’s unique hook is an adapter that ships with the game that allows you to literally plug in any real-life guitar with a standard quarter-inch input jack into your game console to play the game!

The game features gameplay that automatically will adjust to the player’s skill level and promises “innovative game design that makes reading music visually fun and intuitive”. The game promises to engage both “experienced musicians and those who are picking up a guitar for the first time” and both teach them to play the songs they love in the game, as well as outside the game. Naturally, since you are using a real guitar.

Rocksmith is promising a sizeable library of songs from all genres, artists available in the game and revealed so far include: The Animals, The Black Keys, David Bowie, Interpol, Nirvana, and The Rolling Stones.

“Rocksmith is the most authentic and addictive music game ever created,” said Geoffroy Sardin, HQ Chief Marketing & Sales Officer at Ubisoft EMEA. “Whether a beginner or a seasoned guitarist, players can progress at their own speed and walk away from the game with the ability to play songs by memory. Rocksmith is the only video game that gets players stage-ready.”

Here is the game’s debut trailer.

Key features of Rocksmith include:

When we say any guitar we mean any guitar.
Whether it’s the guitar sitting in your attic, your cherished faithful steed, or the guitar you have yet to buy, Rocksmith lets you plug any guitar into your Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 system.

Difficulty settings that adapt to your ability.
You love a challenge, but hate being overwhelmed. With addicting gameplay that adapts to your personal skill level, you will automatically progress from single notes to complex chords without getting in over your head.

Lots of music. Lots of styles.
One of the most satisfying moments for any guitar player is hearing yourself play your favorite song for the first time. Rocksmith has amassed an amazing library of songs from different music genres allowing players to experience that moment first hand.

Play songs instead of just learning them.
You want to play new songs, but you don’t want to labor through tablature or cringe through poorly produced videos. No problem. Rocksmith will not only present you with new songs, but will also challenge you to step away from the notes on screen and play songs by memory.

Nothing compares to playing a real guitar. Except playing Rocksmith.
