Donkey Kong Country Returns 2 is not in development or coming anytime soon says developer Retro Studios.

This will definitely come as a bummer to all of those who loved the very successful Donkey Kong Country Returns that was a huge sales hit for the Nintendo Wii and rebooted the classic series in the side-scrolling style of Rare (the company that developed the original 16-bit Donkey Kong Country series).

This revelation comes from an interview with Nintendo’s Kensuke Tanabe (who helped produce the previous Metroid Prime Trilogy as well as DKCR) in the latest issue of Game Informer.

To quote:
“I wouldn’t say we won’t do a sequel for Donkey Kong Country Returns, but we don’t have anything planned at this time.”

However Tanabe adds that Metroid Prime 2 also wasn’t planned until late into development of the first game.

“I wasn’t even thinking about doing a sequel for Metroid Prime until Retro showed me the last scene in the game, which was near the end of development.”

Here is a video showing the collectables in the first level of the first game.
