The Elder Scrolls 5 may be in the works by Bethesda as a direct-sequel to the hit Western RPG, The Elder Scroll IV: Oblivion, which was released to widespread critical acclaim, Game of the Year Awards, and high sales nearly five years to the date.

According to reports by Eurogamer’s Denmark division, a source has informed them that a direct sequel to Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion is indeed in development as we speak, and the game will pick up right where the last game left off!

To quote Eurogamer:

“This source not only confirmed that the game is in current production, but also spoke briefly about the content — with fantasy-sounding phrases like Dragon Lord, something with The Blades.” The report says this source had “official game documents in hand” to prove all this, and that yes, this will be “the chronological sequel to what happened in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.”

Back in 2009 Bethesda’s Tod Howard said they had moved on from the Elder Scrolls and were making their “next big game” that was unrelated to the series. However later in the year, the Elder Scrolls novel contained a blurb which stated that it “bridged the gap for the next game, set 200 years after the Oblivion crisis” which would seem to suggest a Oblivion sequel was indeed in the works.

Either way, we should find out soon as 2011 looms.

Personally, I am not. I would MUCH rather see a new morrowind. Much better in my opinion. Oblivion didn’t feel anywhere near as unique as morrowind did. Just my opinion.

I agree with Jeff here. I mean I’m excited for a new Elder Scrolls (by FAR my favorite franchise) but I too fall in the Morrowind camp. I have played Morrowind on and off since 2003 and it feels like a new game every time I pick it up. Oblivion I played rather incessantly for a few weeks when I bought it, abandoned it for a year, came back and tried a new game and couldn’t get into it. Now it’s just a paperweight on my shelf. I do enjoy looking at the world map hanging on my wall though so I suppose that’s a bonus.

I think part of it is that the Imperials are so Roman/British/something that you feel like you’ve been there before. I mean in the Knights of Nine was pretty much dealing with crusaders/templars. Morrowind’s world is so unique that it’s impossible to catch everything or feel you understand it all. I will also be mad if Bethesda hasn’t listened and still has creatures level up with you. I mean that was just ridiculous.

In all of that there is excitement somewhere though. I mean yay! New ES game! lol

I’ve enjoyed a few Elder Scrolls games over the years.

I began with Daggerfall. The character customization was phenomenal. Perhaps I’m mistaken but the game really did seem ahead of its time. Lots of copy and paste went into the dungeons and landscapes but the game was still huge–installing it took up the majority of my hard disk space.

Now after having seen Morrowind and Oblivion I was given to the assumption that each game in the franchise would take place in a different territory of the Empire. I realize it’s unrealistic to expect an Elder Scrolls game that contains every province in a vast free-roaming RPG, so I won’t do that. I wouldn’t mind seeing the other provinces though.

Ryan, it’s been a long time since I picked up Daggerfall (a long time)so my memory is more than a little foggy. If I recall correctly, however, there was some carry over from Daggerfall’s ending to Morrowind. The thing was, though, that it was a lore connection and nothing that really impacted game play itself or the game’s location. There is a great little article that talks about it here. Notice that one of Morrowind’s designers weighed in on the conversation.(http://fallingawkwardly.wordpress.com/2010/09/02/the-metaphysics-of-morrowind-part-2/)

I agree with you though, I would like to see another province. Heck, I’d like to see a return to Vvardenfell. The highly popular Morrowind in Oblivion mod, combined with a still (somewhat)active Morrowind modding community, makes it quite clear that a number of people still have not let go of that game or that world. I include myself in that number. As a side note, should you ever decide to go back and play Daggerfall or Arena Bethesda’s official Elder Scrolls website has them available for free download.

I Loved Morrowind, the story was amazing. I liked Oblivion but for different reasons. I think the thing that let down Oblivion was that you were just some guy that helps the new emperor to be. you as an individual where not one of the prophesies in one of the elder scrolls but the events you took part in where. Where in Morrowind you as an individual were in a prophesy in one of the elder scrolls, it was just a more grand story.
