Over 1 million hours of Super Mario World Wii Virtual Console version have been played in Japan alone Nintendo has revealed, just in time for the 20th anniversary of the Super Famicon/Super Nintendo in the Land of the Rising Sun.

The exact number of hours Super Mario World for the SNES has been played in Japan is 1,066,109, which equates to over 121 YEARS of playtime… And the game has only been out on the Wii Virtual Console for four years! Total the game has been played 1,360,629 times in it’s digital form on Wii VC.

However another major Nintendo hit, this time in the Zelda series, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, has only been played 292,454 times for a total of 385,811 hours, a mere 44 years, in comparison. That classic game came out a year after Super Mario World for the SNES and is considered by many to be one of the greatest adventure games of all time, if not greatest games of all time.

However, the average gamer played Zelda more times (18.88) and for longer (11 hours, 43 minutes) than they played Mario.

Interesting numbers. As for myself, I’ve been trying to buy a new Virtual Console game every week, though I typically focus on NES titles. Currently I’ve been playing through Castlevania 2 and Final Fantasy 1.

Now for an absolutely epic Super Mario World music video. I’ll never know how anyone can create such genius….
