Metroid: Other M 2 only possible with Tecmo’s Team Ninja, says Nintendo

Super Metroid HD fanmade screenshot. I'd like to see something like this
Metroid: Other M 2 is a distinct possibility, says Metroid creator Yoshio Sakamoto, but it wouldn’t be possible without Nintendo collaborating once again with Team Ninja, the developer behind Metroid: Other M.

Then again, who knows what the next Metroid game might look like. Whether it WILL be anything like Metroid: Other M remains to be seen. Considering that Nintendo also had Retro Studios (who is now working on Donkey Kong Country Returns) create the drastically different Prime series (as you can read about in my Metroid Prime Trilogy review), anything is possible.

To quote:

“If we are going to decide the next Metroid is going to be a linear extension of Other M, then Team Ninja comes first to my mind as the partner to collaborate with.” – Metroid creator Yoshio Sakamoto

“I’m very grateful for the collaboration with Team Ninja coming up with Metroid: Other M,” Sakamoto told CVG. “As far as my opinion is concerned if we are going to make something similar to Metroid Other M in the future I cannot think that it would be possible for Nintendo to make it without collaborating with Team Ninja. If we are going to decide the next Metroid is going to be a linear extension of Other M then Team Ninja comes first in my mind as the partner for us to collaborate with. But if I’m going to decide that it’s going to be a different story for the next Metroid adventure then depending on the skills, know-how and technology that might require, Team Ninja might not be the choice for us to collaborate with.”

Very, VERY interesting. So the question remains, would you rather have a direct-sequel to Metroid: Other M, or would you rather see Nintendo once again throw a curveball and take the series into a third new direction?

Personally, I’d be interested in seeing a LITERAL 2D side-scrolling Wii version of the series with animated graphics much in the style of something like the PS2′s Odin Sphere or Yoshi’s Island, but applied to a new Metroid. Make it COMPLETE 2D and using the Wii’s processing power.

Heck, even re-releasing Super Metroid like in the screenshot above would be AMAZING. I did love Metroid: Other M though, so a sequel would also be very welcome.

I agree with you completely, they took away the item finding value of the game, and that took away the satisfaction of finding some awesome upgrade or weapon, i mean seriously you start out with every upgrade you got in super metroid BUT you can’t use them cuz Adam told you so, thats retarded.

In my eyes Samus was always the silent, deadly bounty hunter that didn’t need orders, that did her job without hesitation (aside from the baby metroid) but they turned her into this air head that constantly talks and complains I mean hell the ONLY part in the game that Samus acted like her old self was when she enabled her screw attack…Without Adams approval.

They also made the game too linear, half the fun about Super Metroid was the fact that you can do sequence breakers, that added value to the game and I myself as well as thousands of other fans played that Super Metroid over and over just to do the murder beam, space-time beam, beat the game with 0 powerups etc. It was just as linear as fusion and that was one thing i hated about that game!

The game was really short and small, but what do you expect from a game that takes place in a space station, it couldn’t be as big and super metroid was but thats the thing, the larger the world is the more adventurous and exploration there is.

Now there were alot of things i liked about the game, the remade metroid audio was incredible, i think i cried alittle, the graphics were great, the FPS part of the game seemed glitchy and slow especially in boss fights that was too slow for my taste but the 2.5D nature was nice, i did also like the 3d person “behind the back” view that was used in Dead Space, that was a nice touch that added uncertainty and this feeling of anxiety of what you’ll find, whats going to jump at you…. it almost felt like i was playing Dead Space. Also bringing back Phantoon was a nice touch.

I wouldn’t concider Other M as Metroid 4 in my opinion its more like 3.1, It seemed to me that its main story was about the relationship between Adam and Samus and that only came into play cuz of the story of Fusion, so it seems like they made it to explain in greater detail who this Adam character was and why he was important in Fusion, it doesn’t have a transition from Super Metroid to the next mini-series. There were no reference to space pirates eventho they had these federation droids, no reference to the Chozo, and of course the Federation is cloning metroids… that was already done in Fusion. It just didn’t feel like a full game to me but more like a filler to explain certain holes in the story and set up for the next series.

Paul, I really don’t feel like taking the time to even explain how incredibly wrong you are in every aspect of what you just said. I’m just too tired from my last debate.

I have to disagree with most nay-sayers here. I am a true metroid fan, by every variation of the term’s definition. I have played (and beaten 100%) every Metroid game ever released and I am in love with the series. I have read the translated comics, and know just about every aspect of the ongoing storylines. With that said, I must say that METROID: OTHER M IS NOT THE BEST METROID GAME! But, it is a great game nonetheless. Her relationship with Adam was the main focus in Other M, yes. The removal of the item-find sound made it less of a metroid experience, yes. And there is not as much exploration as one would expect from a Metroid game. Yes, yes, yes. But notwithstanding, Metroid: Other M goes deeper into how humbled Samus is in the presence of Adam, and why she is such a driven and independent heroine when he is not around. She has his discipline to thank for that, and the decisiveness of a leader. It is said that she always wanted to be part of the galactic federation but was denied based on gender so she got a buzzcut and pretended to be a boy to be allowed in, Adam caught on to her scheme and reprimanded her for it, but praised her abilities as a soldier and made it so that the federation bend the rule in her favor. The only downside of this was that she had to follow every single rule and command exactly as given or she would be kicked out. Adam’s death would result in less consideration by the galactic federation, etc., so Other M was more of a sentimental trip into the reason Samus is the way she is, I am confident that the sequel to it will be more traditional. Just think about how Other M feels after you’ve beaten the Queen Metroid. Playing it after you’ve obtained the power bomb feels SO much like a true metroid experience, and that’s mainly because you’re not following strict orders. I believe it’s an excellently excecuted title, even if it is not the best in the series. To say that someone is not a true Metroid fan simply because they like this game is proof that some people have never even seen Metroid 1 and 2, and if you have never read the manga, then you have no idea what you are talking about. You probably don’t know why Kraid is only in Zebes, probably don’t know the relationship between Mother Brain and Samus, or between Phantoon and Mother Brain. If you don’t know why Phantoon was attacking the Bottle ship AFTER it was scheduled to be destroyed, then you shouldn’t be telling anyone about what is and what isn’t. Just saying.
