Path of Exile is an upcoming free-to-play downloadable online PC game that follows in the footsteps of Diablo.

Because it’s free, that means that all of the game’s character classes, quests, chapters, abilities and items are available to everyone and anyone. You can see the game’s classes and some of the combat, enemies and areas in the trailer.

Although the game is free, there will be paid content in the form of graphical aesthetics that you can purchase (like to make your spells more attractive or your armor more badass), and you’ll also have to pay to change your character’s name. Thankfully though, New Zealand developer Grinding Gear Games doesn’t plan on offering items or profile buffs for sale.

“Some of the free-to-play games out there aren’t actually free to play the way you want to–they’re free to tolerate,” said Wilson. “You can tell some of the games definitely want you pay money at regular intervals, and they’ll punish you by having long grinds that you could be skipping–we just skip that entirely by not having the ability to buy those things. You can dress up your character if you’d like to. The other thing is that our game is made by western developers for a western market–hopefully that counts for something.”

The game doesn’t look half bad. Key features include:

  • A Dark Fantasy Action RPG.
  • Free to play online.
  • Randomly generated levels and items.
  • Visceral PVE and PVP Combat.
  • Dynamic Skill System.
  • 6 Character Classes.
  • Here is some gameplay footage. It’s fun to note that the developers have been laboring away at the game for 6 years. Hopefully it’ll be good enough to justify all that time spent on development.
