Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike coming to Xbox 360 & PS3 as a downloadable Live Arcade and PlayStation Network game
Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike is coming to Xbox 360 and PS3 in the form of Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network downloadable titles announced Capcom at Comic-Con 2010.

This was revealed during a panel on Super Street Fighter 4 that was held during the San Diego Comic Con with SF4 producer Yoshinori Ono.

While he didn’t offer any details on the upcoming game, he did say that Capcom has not forgotten about Street Fighter 3 and has every intention of bringing it back for fans who enjoyed it. While the game is pretty popular competitively, it was anything but mainstream and, many would argue, further isolated many fans (especially casual fans) away from the series. But while Street Fighter 4 arguably brought them back into the fold, Street Fighter 3 still remains beloved by many hardcore fighting game fans.

The most obvious update to the game will be the addition of online play . . . which hasn’t been confirmed but is a given. What isn’t known is if they will completely remake the game with all-new graphics, music, etc. like they did with Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix (who’s music was composed by the awesome videogame fan composing community at OverClocked Remix) or if the game will not see any real changes.

Specifically, Ono did go out of his way to put emphasis on how big a fan he is of the game, saying,

  • “We’re going to take our time to bring this out.”
  • “It’s not going to come out in the immediate future, but just let everyone know that Street Fighter 3 is coming back.”
  • Last but not least, Ono says that if you have any major features you’d like to see in the game, then to visit the official Capcom Unity web-site “and tell Seth Killian”.
  • So it definitely sounds like Capcom knows that they have to get this right. It is obviously fan service, though it could also be a big downloadable hit as well given the cult classic nature of the game.

It’s also worth noting that Street Fighter 3 WAS re-released back in 2004 as part of the Street Fighter Anniversary Edition collection (which also included Hyper Street Fighter II – The Anniversary Edition). What’s more, the original Xbox1 version released in 2005 INCLUDED online play over Xbox Live. So naturally the new version WILL have online play undoubtedly as well.

Are you excited to see Capcom resurrect Street Fighter 3? What new features or additions would you add to the game?

If you’ve never seen Street Fighter 3, here is a video of it in action between two pro players.
