Killzone 3 has been confirmed and announced officially by Sony and Guerrilla Games and is a direct follow-up to Killzone 2.

The biggest pieces of news about the game are the revelations of a jet pack, which players will both use and be fighting against, and the fact that the game will have a stereoscopic 3D mode that promises to be a “game changer”, say the developers.

The developers of Killzone 3 have also taken into consideration criticism from fans and critics about the first game in order to make it much improved over it’s predecessor. One of which was the fact that there were too many “corridors”. So now Killzone 3 will feature more wide open environments as well as differing environments to constantly change up the gameplay and locales. One of the new environments will be an arctic environment. And this diversity will hit from the start of the game and extend throughout, instead of only appearing towards the back half of the game like in Killzone 2.

The jetpack works like an extended jump and allows you to blast forward twice while high in the air before you have to land. It promises to really mix up the gameplay and offer all kinds of new possibilities. They will be lightweight and agile, and the developers want to make them the opposite of ‘sluggish”, as in other games that have used a jetpack.

The enemy in Killzone 3 will one again be the Helghast, although Killzone 3 will show they still “have humanity left in them.” And the developers are aiming to give the players a feeling of “being in a place far away from home, outnumbered by people who want to kill you.”

The game is reportedly running on a new graphics engine that Naughty Dog helped develop as well, so you know the game is going to look fantastic.

Here are a few more solid details:

* New weapon called the Wasp, basically shoots a “flurry of rockets” at an enemy.
* Will show off the Helghast culture.
* There is actually a Helghast language, which will be explored in the game.
* Will have “diverse locales.”
* Jetpacks double as a weapon, which basically means a machine gun mounted right on top of it.
* If you shoot Helghast with jetpacks, they’ll “explode like roman candles”
* To control the jetpack, you “have to activate bursts of speed in midair, propelling yourself across further distances.”
* The Jetpack resembles something you’d do in platformers such as Super Mario Bros. Or Uncharted.

No release date details were given, but we are sure to learn much more at E3 2010 in June.
