Our Super Mario Bros. 2 walkthrough video guide will help you reach the last level of this unusual Mario game and topple the big, bad, end boss.

Super Mario Bros. 2 is the ugly duckling of the Super Mario Bros. series and in many ways is the runt of the group, even if the game itself is an outstanding title from beginning to end. Originally released in Japan as Doki Doki Panic, Nintendo swapped the original game’s characters with the Mario universe and released it in the United States as “Super Mario Bros. 2″ in replace of the REAL Super Mario Bros. 2 (Now known in the West as “Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels”). The reasoning behind the bait and switch was due to the true sequel’s similarity to the original Super Mario Bros. and how it game was extremely difficult. Nintendo thought it would be TOO difficult for Americans and thus this Mario-ized version of Doki Doki Panic was their ticket.

Since Americans were none-the-wiser, Super Mario Bros. 2 took on a life of it’s own and became a beloved cult-classic despite it’s true nature. So much so that Nintendo ended up making the game canon themselves when they re-released it for the Game Boy Advance (with significant upgrades and enhancements) as “Super Mario Advance” sans “Super Mario Bros. 2″ anywhere in the title. The name-change was also to avoid confusion, because the original NES game was such a hit in America that Nintendo of Japan released it in that country as “Super Mario USA”.

The game is very odd and weird in a variety of ways, which made it extremely intriguing, and many of the game’s enemies like Shy Guys and Birdo latter became series staples and part of the charming Super Mario universe as a whole.

Super Mario Bros. 2 is now available for download on the Wii Virtual Console for 500 Wii Points ($5) and is also available on the Game Boy Advance (in updated form) as Super Mario Advance. It’s also found on the SNES with updated graphics as part of the Super Mario All-Stars compilation and for the NES in it’s original cart form.
