Hardcore is a 2D-sidescrolling run-and-gun shooter (ala Contra) that was originally in development for the Sega Genesis in 1994 by Psygnosis.

It was nearly finished and ready to go when Psygnosis pulled the plug on the title . . . and it was effectively cancelled . . . along with thirteen others (talk about a tough break). One of those games is shown below for the first time, and was to be called “Hardcore”.

A new video of the game was posted on youtube where DICE co-founders Andreas Axelsson and Olof Gustafsson show off the action-packed title, which looks really cool in my humble opinion. The video was filmed at the DATASTORM 2010 party in February, and the game is currently owned by Sony and Psygnosis (who is now Sony Liverpool).

Because of the rights issue, DICE has been unable to release the game to the public, but they promise that they are “working on it”. I certainly hope so, because the game looks pretty interesting, and since it was practically a minute away from being finished (99%!), then it shouldn’t be too hard to repackage it and sell it today. Could you imagine if they did so and it was successful? Ahhhh, the wonders of technology!

Here is what could have been way back in ’94.
