How to Unlock All PokeWalker Routes

The Pokewalker is a very unique device that comes included with Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver and allows you to literally take your Pokemon with you as you walk around in real-life. Walking your Pokemon with the Pokewalker pedometer allows you to train your Pokemon with each step, unlock Watts (the currency), and discover Pokemon. You’ll also be able to unlock new routes for your Pokemon in the Pokewalker. But to do so you will need to do some MAD WALKING. In fact, to unlock all of the routes in the Pokewalker you’ll need to walk OVER ONE THOUSAND miles! This assumes that you take at least 2,000 steps per mile.

Cheat to get 1,000 miles on your PokeWalker without walking: Put the Pokewalker on the top of a box fan. Then turn the fan on to the highest setting! This should get the Pokewalker to record over 35 steps per minute. Now that’s what I call a cakewalk!

How the Pokewalker Works

Using the infrared port on your Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver Game Card, you can transfer Pokemon between your DS and Pokewalker. The Pokewalker can store a single Pokemon and then allows that Pokemon to gain Experience Points as you walk around in real life. Walk enough and it’ll hopefully level-up.

The PokeWalker itself is a small device, shaped like a Pokeball, that you can fit in your pocket, hook to your belt or attach to a strap through the holes.

The Pokéwalker counts the number of steps you take as you walk around. The more steps you take, the more Watts you earn, which you can spend to find items and new Pokémon! As described in the section above, you can take your Pokemon on various routes, and depending on the route they’ll catch different Pokemon (like grasslands or along the sea) as well as find different rare items.

Here is a video showing off the PokeWalker.

How to Catch Wild Pokemon With Pokewalker

After collecting Watts by taking steps in real life, you’ll be able to spend them on using the “Poke Radar”. This allows you to catch Wild Pokemon! If you use the Poke Radar on grass and see it rustling, you’ll know that you’ve found a Pokemon. You then must battle it to catch it. You can either Attack, Evade or try to Catch the Wild Pokemon. If you Evade when a Pokemon attacks, you’ll perform a Counter Attack. If you’ve done enough damage to the Pokemon, try to catch it! Note that you can only keep three caught Pokemon at a time before you must transfer them back to your DS game. If you don’t transfer them, then you’ll have to set one free to keep the fourth you catch.

How to Find Items With PokeWalker

Just like the with Radar, you can use the Dowsing Machine to find hidden items. The currency for using the Dowsing Machine is Watts, just like with the Radar. Use it to find some uncommon items. Once you use the Dowsing Machine, you’ll see six patches of grass. ONE of them holds the item. You only have two shots to take your pick and hope it is an item. You can only keep up to three items in the PokeWalker before you must transfer them to your DS game.

How to Use the PokeWalker Journal

Your PokeWalker comes with a unique journal feature that will recap what has happened in the PokeWalker realm after your Pokemon have spent a certain amount of time in the Walker. The journal will list the places you’ve visited, and what your Pokemon has discovered. So if you find a certain Pokemon or certain item, the Journal will keep note of that. It will also take note of your Pokemon’s behavior within the Walker!

How to Make PokeWalkers Talk With Each Other

PokeWalkers can communicate with each other as well as with Game Cards. If you are walking and you discover another PokeWalker in the vicinity, you can connect them together to both get a special gift item! To connect two PokeWalkers, point their infrared signals towards each other. You can receive up to 10 items by connecting with friends, but you can only accept one item per person per day.
