Final Fantasy 1 and 2 coming to iPhone

Final Fantasy I and Final Fantasy II iPhone/iPod Touch have been announced and confirmed by Square Enix via a Facebook posting revealing the existence of the two ports.

Exact details on which versions the iPhone ports will be were not confirmed, but it looks like they will be the PlayStation Portable remakes with the extremely spiffy graphics. The PSP versions were released for Final Fantasy’s 20th anniversary in 2007 exclusively for PSP and are considered the “ultimate” versions of the game, with much slicker graphics, all-new character art, new dungeons (which includes the Final Fantasy I Dawn of Souls dungeon from the Game Boy Advance version), a full 16:9 widescreen presentation and an updated camera view. Although it contains the same script as the Dawn of Souls remakes released before the PSP versions.

The iPhone versions have also been updated to fit the new iPhone interface and controls, naturally. The standard Command Menu that includes Fight, Magic, Defend, Item and Run has been completely replaced with a new, more friendly illustrated touch menu.

It’s not known whether these games will be released together or separately, although if I had to guess I’d say separately. Though I think the value would be much greater if they re-released them as one package instead. Pricing and release date information were not announced.

Either way, it’s great to see such great classic RPGs coming to the iPhone in upgraded form for the masses. Despite their age, these are still some mighty fine RPGs.
