Diablo 3 release date not until 2011-2012

Sadly for fans, Diablo 3′s release date has been put in the “coming in the next few years” category of developer Blizzard’s “who knows when it ships” timeline.

Diablo 3 was first unveiled at Blizzard’s Worldwide Invitational in 2008, and the latest Diablo release was the Diablo 2 expansion pack Lord of Destruction back in 2001. In a recent interview, Blizzard executive vice president of game design Rob Pardo was asked why it’s taking so long for the sequel to come out? He answered:

“We always announce all of our games too early. We realize that and go, ‘You know what? Next time we’re not going to do that.’ And then we always fail at that. But I’d rather fail at that than fail at making the game great. I think it’s safe to say that, yeah, (Diablo III) is not going to be out next year.”

He clarified Diablo 3 skipping 2010 had nothing to do with StarCraft 2 and the World of Warcraft expansion pack Cataclysm both coming out in 2010. To quote:

“We just have a different process and approach than a lot of other studios, and it makes it a very difficult process for us to predict street dates when we’re multiple years out.”
