Modern Warfare 2 sold 4.7 million copies on launch day

Ice-T has Modern Warfare 2. Do you?
Modern Warfare 2 has shattered records and fulfilled Activision’s promise of offering the biggest entertainment launch the world has ever seen.

Modern Warfare 2 sold through 4.7 million copies in 24 HOURS. That is roughly 55 copies of the game sold EVERY SECOND since the game launched. These numbers include all three versions, PC, Xbox 360 and PS3, and the territories of the United States, Canada and United Kingdom. This also amounts to over $310 million dollars in sales in ONE DAY. The North American total comes to 3.38 million units.

By comparison, the biggest US day-one film gross, The Dark Knight, took in $158.4 million during its July 20, 2008, premiere. Mind blowing.

As far as other previous record-holders are concerned, Grand Theft Auto IV held the previous record selling 3.6 million units and generating $310 million in sales. But that included all territories worldwide. Modern Warfare 2 sold more in one day than Halo 3 sold in an entire week!

And believe it or not, this was ABOVE expectations. The number of copies sold for Modern Warfare 2 is so high that it is more than Cowen Group analyst Doug Creutz had expected for the entire month of November!

“We believe U.S. sales likely will amount to 55 percent of the worldwide total, implying a first day worldwide estimate of roughly 7 million,” he says.

“The Call of Duty franchise has become a cultural phenomenon showing the power of video games as an entertainment medium,” says Activision Publishing CEO Mike Griffith.

That is very interesting. I knew it would be big, but that has blown it out of the water. Talk about revenue eh? But all the same, a good, er great game deserves to be rewarded like this. I think Infinity Ward and Activision have started something new.
