Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto has spoken on the Wii 2 in an interview with Popular Mechanics.
Following on the heels of Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Michael Pachter predicting a new Wii HD console to release next year, and Iwata stating that a new Wii system isn’t coming “any time in the near future”, now Miyamoto has gotten in on the Wii sequel action.
Here is what the Wii, Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong, Pikmin, Wii Sports, Wii Fit creator had to say about Wii Next,
“With both the Wii Remote itself and Wii MotionPlus, what we’ve been able to do is introduce an interface that is both, I think, appealing and at the right price for a broad audience,” he said. “And while we don’t have any concrete plans for what we’ll be doing with hardware in the future, what I can say is that, my guess is that because we found this interface to be so interesting, I think it would be likely that we would try to make that same functionality perhaps more compact and perhaps even more cost-efficient.”
It seems likely that motion controls will be the norm on all next-gen consoles, so Miyamoto’s talk isn’t surprising in the least. Especially since Sony’s Motion Controllers will be releasing in Spring of 2010 for the PS3 and Microsoft’s Natal will also be debuting next year.
What will be interesting is to see if Nintendo goes with a more powerful console compariable to the other systems next round, or if it will literally be an updated Wii.
