Splatterhouse will be returning to consoles . . . although sadly it won’t be before Halloween THIS year.

Maybe next though, as publisher Namco Bandai has announced that they have narrowed down the release date for the new, next-gen Splatterhouse for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 to “third quarter 2010″.

Which may mean that we’ll get the game around Halloween of NEXT YEAR.

We last reported on the game back in February of this year, so I thought an update was in order for anyone who was anticipating this horror game revival.

This new entry in the series features an all-new, although similar, storyline than that of the original game. In this one, players will take on the role of a college student looking for his kidnapped girlfriend. As you’d expect, he comes across a mask while in the middle of his search that contains a dark secret . . . and fills him not only with great power, but also an unquenchable thirst for blood. The story is being penned by Gordon Rennie of Judge Dredd and Necronauts fame.

The new game also has an all-new third-person perspective instead of side-scrolling like the original games, as you can see in this super short trailer.

And here is a more in-depth interview about the game (which may have changed by now).

If you want to play the original TurboGrafx games, you can download Splatterhouse for Virtual Console as well as Splatterhouse 2, both available on the Wii via the Wii Shop.
