PSPGo launch includes 225 downloadable games, 2,300 movies and 13,300 TV show episodes
If you had any doubt that Sony wants it’s PSP to be THE total entertainment portable device on the market, then news of what the system will be launching with should remove any doubt.

When the 160GB system launches on October 1st at a price point of $250 (which is only $50 less than the 120GB PlayStation 3 Slim) it will include these staggering numbers for download via the PlayStation Store.

* 225 downloadable games. This includes both older PSP UMD titles, retro PS1 titles and brand-new titles. Here’s a list of what will be on offer: God of War: Chains of Olympus, Daxter, Star Wars: Battlefront II, Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Vegas, Tetris, Fieldrunners, Madden NFL 10, Soulcalibur: Broken Destiny, Monster Hunter: Freedom Unite, and Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10. As well as Beaterator, MotorStorm Arctic Edge, PixelJunk Monsters Deluxe, and the long-awaited Gran Turismo PSP.
* 13,300 episodes of various TV Shows will be available for download.
* 2,300 movies will also be on offer for download from the PlayStation Network.
* All in all, on day one there will be nearly 16,000 pieces of downloadable content for the PSPGo.

Now THAT is impressive.

Speaking of the games available, SCEA hardware marketing director John Koller told GameSpot that after October 1 his company will try to make as many new UMD releases as possible available on the PlayStation Store.

“We can’t say ‘all’ because there are legal restrictions in converting some titles to digital, but on the whole, we expect a substantial amount,” explained Koller. “I think what consumers can expect is to go onto the PSP store and see a large amount of previously released UMD content and see day-and-date releases of new games.”

To that end, Sony will even be offering “PlayStation Network Game Cards” in retail stores. These cards will come with a download code that will allow people to purchase “physical” copies of virtual downloadable games.

The first round of cards will offer codes to download Gran Turismo, Daxter, MotorStorm Arctic Edge, God of War: Chains of Olympus, Hot Shots Golf: Open Tee 2, Patapon 2, Secret Agent Clank, Twisted Metal: Head On, SOCOM: Fireteam Bravo 2, and NBA 10: The Inside.

It is a shame though that American gamers are not being offered anything for their older UMD PSP games if they upgrade to a PSPGo, as Sony is offering in Europe. Where new PSPGo buyers can get three free games if they own older PSP games on UMD. Because of this, I imagine that the PSPGo will mostly attract new PSP buyers. Especially because there is no transferring of UMD disc games to your PSP Go, so if you already have a PSP collection, it is unplayable on the new system which lacks a UMD disc drive.
