No UMD play on PSP Go. Nor transferring to digital says Sony
Can you transfer UMD disc games to PSP Go? I hear you ask. The answer is no, you cannot. Sony of Europe has confirmed this sad fact.

That means that people out there who own a lot of PSP games on UMD disc may want to think twice about upgrading to a PSP Go, especially if they are going to be trading that system in for the new one. Since the PSP Go completely lacks a disc drive, that means your entire collection of PSP games on UMD will no longer be playable on the system. Which replaces the UMD drive with 16GB of internal memory and support for Sony’s proprietary M2 Memory Cards for additional memory.

This is extremely disheartening, because it means that you may have to simply re-buy the games you already own on UMD digitally and download them to your $250 PSP Go . . . something not a lot of people are going to be willing to do. This is an extremely mis-sighted step for Sony in my humble opinion.

However Sony does recognize this is an issue, which is why they came up with a PSP Go Rewards program which will at least allow owners of older PSP systems to select up to three free games when they upgrade to a PSP Go, as long as they can prove that they own one of the 17 games on UMD. However they only allow you to choose from 17 titles (games include: Killzone Liberation, Medievil, Wipeout Pure, Buzz Brain Bender, Buzz Master Quiz, SOCOM U.S. Navy SEALs: Fireteam Bravo, Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters, Everybody’s Golf, Resistance: Retribution, Syphon Filter Dark Mirror, Lemmings, LocoRoco, Patapon, Syphon Filter: Logan’s Shadow, Echochrome, Pursuit Force: Extreme Justice, and Daxter).

The scheme will launch alongside the console on October 1 and will run until March 31, 2010. However it is currently open to residents of European territories only.

Here are the direct steps you will need to take to get your free games with the PSP Rewards program:

1. Unwrap your new PSP Go and start it up.
2. Connect to PlayStation Network and activate your new or existing PlayStation Network account for PSP Go Rewards. Make sure to use a valid and current e-mail address because you’ll need it to get your free games.
3. Start up your current PSP and connect to the PlayStation Network using it
4. Login using the same PlayStation Network account, and launch the PlayStation Store. If you are new you will need to sign up.
5. Pop one of your UMDs into the drive of your current PSP and register on PSP Go Rewards when prompted
6. Download a PSP Go theme.
7. Wait for your e-mail voucher for your three free games.
8. Choose three titles from the 17 available, download and enjoy!

This handheld is going to fail epically. It’s more expensive. The games are more expensive. Everything about it is more expensive while at the same time, the handheld is crippled in so many ways

I agree with Anna – Plus it’s definitly not as awesome looking as the PSP slim. Also, how would you get a protective case for something like that? It has an odd shape.

In the long run, I am sticking to my PSP

I feel sorry for Sony… I have a PSP (the first ones) and it is the most awesome thing ever. And then this… thing… came out. No disc drive? SRSLY?!!! Sony has fallen prey to the belief that we live in a download oriented world, but the truth is… no. Not for games, people want to own the actual hard copy. Music yeah download whatever, but games will take AGES to get to that point.
