An all-new 2D side-scrolling High Definition Sonic game is coming with a 2010 release date according to a new teaser trailer from Sega, revealing the title.

The teaser trailer shows a Blue Blur racing across the screen, collecting coins while words pass in front that read, “Speed returns in an all new 2D adventure built from the ground up” and ends with a silhouette of the new Sonic the Hedgehog logo and the 2010 date with the zero’s replaced with spinning Sonic Rings. All the while the trailer is accompanied by classic sound effects that fans of the original game are so fond of.

Code-named “Project Needlemouse”, this new title is a response to “old-school Sonic fans who have long asked to see Sonic return to a more 2D style of gameplay.” According to Sega Associate Brand Manager Ken Balough.

The game will be released next summer for as of yet unspecified console platforms. Let’s hope this is the true return of the Hedgehog ala Super Mario Galaxy.

Here is the teaser trailer.
