PS3 emotion detecting/reading device patented by Sony
Sony has filed a very interesting new patent for what is essentially an “emotion detection/sensor” device that uses a camera and microphone.

The device, which one would presume to be a PlayStation Eye camera, is able to detect a player’s “emotion” by combining the video and audio feed. Detectable emotions would include laughter, sadness, joy, anger and even boredom.

It detects this by reading facial expressions and actions. Such as laughing, yawning, not paying attention, or giving looks or actions that would indicate that you are scared.

Since this is just a patent, nothing has been announced. And we can only speculate on how exactly Sony would make use of this technology. But it is certainly interesting.

With the motion control system and the 3D effects (which PS3 will be gettin 1st) comin out surely will put PS3 in 2nd if not 1st place.

I really don’t know what to think about this “emotion sensing”. I don’t really see how it could be used in a game. But as we’ve seen with the Wii, it’s hard for developers to even make great use of motion controls without doing what you could do without them. So I think that if Sony could actually find some good uses for this device, then it could lead to something cool. But it will still be a “gimmick”.
