Nintendo inventor Gunpei Yokoi had a soft spot for games-on-the-go, and he knew he could take this medium to the next level. The Game Boy launched in Japan on April 31, 1989. An American launch followed on July 31, 1989.
It became an overnight success, literally, by selling 40,000 handheld units on day one with the pack-in game Tetris. The rest as they say is history… The then-revolutionary Game Boy found its way into 120 million pair of hands during its decade-long reign.
This IGN retro tribute walks you through the chain of events.

Aside from the pack-in Tetris game, what Game Boy games did you own? I just dug up my original Game Boy, and I still got the Super Mario/Wario Land series, Pokemon Yellow, Contra, Donkey Kong, Killer Instinct, Castlevania, Batman, Spider-Man, etc.
