Bill Gates says Xbox 360’s project Natal will bring gesture recognition to PC too

Bill Gates with Master Chieft. Wants NATAL to be used with PC and other media
It looks like Microsoft has plans for its Project NATAL Motion Sensing Camera even beyond the Xbox 360 and to Windows itself, according to Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates.

Speaking in an interview with CNET News, Gates spoke of how Microsoft would like a world in which the NATAL (or something like it, these “depth-sensing cameras”) could be used to control everything from your PC to your TV.

In a pretty much direct confirmation (though he may be jumping the gun), Gates said Project NATAL was not just for video games but for media consumption as a whole. “And even if they connect it up to Windows PCs for interacting in terms of meetings, and collaboration, and communication. Both the Xbox guys and the Windows guys latched onto that and now even since they latched onto it the idea of how it can be used in the office is getting much more concrete, and is pretty exciting.”

He went on to speak about how much value it could add to the office or home computer. “And I think there’s incredible value as we use that in the office connected to a Windows PC. So Microsoft research and the product groups have a lot going on there, because you can use the cost reduction that will take place over the years to say, why shouldn’t that be in most office environments.”
