Here is a list of Super Mario 64 DS cheats, tips, secrets and hints will help you gain easy lives and have a lot more fun with this Nintendo DS launch game.
Super Mario 64 DS is a remake of the Nintendo 64 classic Super Mario 64 with three added characters: Yoshi, Wario and Luigi, as well as new stages and touch-screen controls.
How to open the Cannon outside the castle
To open the cannon outside the castle, you must get 150 stars. Doing so will open the cannon and allow you to blast from there on to the top of Princess Peach’s castle, where you can gain three 1-ups, a cap and Luigi’s rabbit.
How to unlock the Key for each character:
Luigi Key – Beat King Boo in Luigi’s Painting on the 3rd Floor of Big Boo’s Haunt.
Mario Key – Beat Goomboss behind 8-Star Door in the Rec-Room.
Wario Key – With Luigi in Mirror Room, hop into Wario’s Painting and Defeat the Giant Ice Bully.
White Room Key – Catch all the Shining Rabbits.
How to easily get your cap back (and see Toad wearing it!)
There are certain levels in the game where you can lose your cap (It will get blown off for example or taken by a vulture). If this happens while you are playing as Mario, Luigi or Wario (since Yoshi doesn’t wear a cap) there are two ways to get it back. The hard way, and the way it was done in the N64 original, is to go back to the stage you lost it. You should find it somewhere in the level. But the easiest and funnest way is to go into any level while you are cap-less, and get any star. When you return to the castle and go to the main hall, find Toad and you will notice that he is wearing your cap! Talk to him and he will say he found it in the castle out front and give it back to you.
How to easily heal yourself
If you are low in health at any point in the game, find a body of water and jump into it. When you swim to the surface your health will replenish all the way, completely healing you.

Walk Underwater in Dire Dire Docks
There is a trick you can do in Dire Dire Docks to walk under the water. First make sure that Bowser’s Submarine is in the docking area (this only happens on certain Stars). If it is, then climb atop the sub and head towards the propellers on the back of the sub. You’ll notice it is slightly above the water. The trick is to get in the water and swim to the propellers. While underwater jump up under it and quickly do a ground pound. If done correctly you’ll fall all the way to the ocean floor and be able to walk underwater. You can use this trick to get some underwater Stars on this stage more easily.
The secret level speeds of Tick Tock Clock
Tick Tock Clock is one of the hardest and most original levels in the game. Depending on where the clock hands are facing when you jump into the stage, time in the level will be either slower or faster. There are a few tricks to make the level easier. If you jump into the clock when the hands are on 3:00, the level will be slow. If you jump into it at 6:00, the level will be on Medium speed. If you jump into the clock at 9:00, the level will be super fast. If you jump into it at 12:00, time in the level will be completely stopped/frozen.
How to create Square Eggs with Yoshi
To make Yoshi create square-shaped Eggs (instead of round like normal), select Yoshi as your playable character and go to a level that has square crates (such as the Hazy Maze Cave stage). Then eat the crate with Yoshi and press R to swallow. The egg that pops out will be square-shaped instead of an oval!

Additional Warp Zone in Bob-Omb Battlefield
After going up the first slanted bridge, you will see a flower bed. Stand in the flower bed and you will warp to another flower bed in the level. Either flower bed works as warp to the other one.
Slide shortcut in Cool Cool Mountain
If you are playing the Cool Cool Mountain level and want some additional 1-Ups, you can get some via a shortcut in the slide. To get to the slide jump inside the chimney on the house near where you start out. Once you’ve started sliding down you will notice a line of 5 coins near the first tunnel. Slide into the coins and then into the wall and you will pass through it. You’ll find three 1-Ups, two in the tunnel and one at the end on top of the ledge. Note that you can’t use this shortcut to beat the Penguin Race, as he will say you are cheating.
How to destroy the rotating Toy Boxes in Shifting Sand Land
In Shifting Sand Land you will find these rolling “Toy Boxes” that come hurdling down towards you in one section of the level that is surrounded by lethal quicksand. These Toy Boxes are quite annoying. However they can be destroyed if you are playing as Wario. As Wario, make sure to stand so that the hollow of the Toy Box lands on you so you are inside it. Once inside, quickly punch it before it rolls again. This will send it flying, thus destroying it.
How to easily get all shining rabbits with Yoshi
Here is a trick to easily get all eight shining rabbits using Yoshi. As soon as you start to see the shiny rabbits, which randomly appear in place of the other rabbits, quickly switch to Yoshi. As Yoshi you will always find three rabbits at the end of the bridge to the castle. As Yoshi, walk outside the castle to see the bridge, check to see if any of the rabbits are shining ones. If not, then go back inside the castle then come out again. Keep doing this until you encounter all 8 shining rabbits.
Hear a different phrase from End-Game Bowser
If you beat the game after already having collected all 150 Power Stars, you can beat the game again to hear a different phrase from Bowser.
How to race a very fat penguin
Once you have beaten the game and collected all 150 Stars, return to the Cool Cool Mountain stage and go inside the chimney. You will now be able to race a very fat version of the penguin.
Missing Characters in Ending Sequence
You can slightly change the ending sequence of the game by not unlocking the extra characters, or only unlocking certain ones. By doing this, you will eliminate that characters part in the ending sequence. This will also change the position of the characters on the cake at the ending screen of the game.
