Arguably the single biggest and most exciting announcement out of Nintendo’s E3 2009 Press Conference was Metroid: Other M.

“Other M” came completely out of left field and is an all-new Metroid game in development by Team Ninja of Ninja Gaiden series (Xbox, Xbox 360, PS3) fame! And yes, jaws were dropped.

As you can tell from the very impressive trailer below, the game places a large emphasis on storyline told through both in-game and CG cut-scenes that are highly anime influenced. The game will also delve deeper into the story of Samus and includes such obscure characters as Adam from Metroid Fusion.

But the most amazing aspect of the game is the gameplay. As this is developed by Team Ninja, the game looks like a crazy hybrid of Ninja Gaiden mixed with Metroid inspired shooting of both a side-scrolling and 3D, first-person perspective. The game actually reminds me of the Haloid Master Chief vs Samus video by Monty Oum. I wonder if that video somehow served as an inspiration?

All in all the game looks absolutely insane and it easily shot up my most anticipated list with a single trailer.

Although the game looks awesome, I’m not digging the name. I keep accidentally calling it “Project M”.

It’s also worth nothing that Metroid: Other M is NOT the Metroid Dread project, which is a supposed new 3D Metroid game which may or may not still be in development . . . as reported by Kotaku.
