Sony may be bringing downloadable music to the PSP according to reports that allege Sony is in the preliminary stages of offering downloadable music to the PSP via the PlayStation Network.
According to industry insiders, Sony has been speaking to various record labels although no deals have been struck at this point and things are only in the very beginning stages.
If true this could be a pretty huge deal because it would put the PSP in direct competition with other competing music download services and handheld platforms like Apple’s iPhone and Microsoft’s Zune.
“This makes total sense that Sony would try to get [music] content for the device,” Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Michael Pachter told CNET when asked about the rumors. “If Sony is smart, they would manage it the same way iTunes has and be device-agnostic. Whatever you get on a Sony site should play on an iPod as well.”
